Being the vast community that NASCAR is, the fans are equally interested in behind-the-scene dramas, spicy insider talks, and controversial discourses. And now, there’s quite a buzz going around in the organization regarding the upcoming show that Trackhouse Racing Team is about to put on at the Indianapolis Road Course next week.

Just over a month has passed since three-time Supercar champion Shane Van Gisbergen aced his debut race at the Chicago Road course. With another road course ahead, the V8 car sensation has another chance to showcase his skills in handling the next-gen car. Just a brief recap; a throwback to 2011: “The Smoke” made the impossible possible. Tony Stewart won his third NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship at Homestead Miami. Holding off the then-championship leader Carl Edwards and his team, Tony drove three and even four wide on every restart and dashed forth to collect the checkered flag. But, after the victory, the Stewart-Haas owner fired his own crew chief and signed Steve Addington of Team Penske instead. Why, you may ask? Obviously, there was more to the story.

Spotlight on July, former Stewart-Haas Racing crew chief Darian Grubb found his aura back with SVG’s win at Chicago. In a conversation with Todd Gordon and MRN’s Steve Post, Grubb faced a question that made him look back at the cusp of entering Trackhouse’s Project 91.

He was asked, “You had so many years on the pit box…as a pit crew; 334 starts. You stepped away full-time from the pit box. Was there ever any thought that I’m not gonna go to victory lane again, and if so, how rewarding was it in Chicago to get that feeling again on top of that pit box?”

Grubb doubted achieving another victory as a crew chief. However, he revealed the immense importance that SVG’s victory posed in his career. He said, “I’m very happy with that, the way my career has gone and then something like that…you go out there and you pull off another win…it’s more excitement”

“I just can’t say how blessed I am to be able to be in that situation,” he added.

Grubb had taken his time off from the pit box to spend more time with his two kids, Gavin and Gabriella. However, after winning at Grant Park 220, the kids wanted to go to Indianapolis in case Trackhouse wins again. So, this entire initiative seemed like a “Double-edged sword” for the 47-year-old NASCAR engineer. Obviously, there is a lot of hope revolving around Project 91.

Darian Grubb was a part of teams like Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, and Stewart-Haas Racing. During the discussion, Todd Gordon, Jimmie Johnson‘s crew chief, inquired about the ways life had changed at Trackhouse Racing. Grubb illuminated the friendly atmosphere in the team that made the hosts smile in contentment.

“It’s more just a small team atmosphere. I have to say Justin’s vision is truly small team, everybody working together, everybody pulling their weight, everybody has to do multiple jobs, we just do this on the side because we all love it,” he admitted.

The family feeling inside the team is indeed heart-warming. For them, going to work is like going to work with one’s own buddies. It can be quite entertaining to witness the leisure pursuits of the group.

“Go over to Charlotte Motor Speedway, race some school buses, and have some pit crew guys versus some shop guys versus some management. We do this stuff for fun!” As Grubb mentioned the school bus racing, the listeners gaped their eyes in amazement and burst out laughing.
