Dale Jr., Byron, and now Gragson—What’s with NASCAR drivers and their LEGO obsession?

As the NASCAR grid has locked down for the two-week holiday, drivers spend their free time in their own ways. Most are enjoying quality time with family, while others are buried in fascinating building games. William Byron and Dale Earnhardt Jr. have long been part of the latter group, displaying their love for Legos. Now another Stewart-Haas Racing driver, Noah Gragson, has joined that architect clique.

This year has been particularly difficult for the SHR team, as it will permanently shut by the end of the season. Its drivers have fumbled to secure their futures, and most of them have thankfully fixed their future homes. Amid this tumultuous time, one of Tony Stewart’s studs is choosing to relax in the Lego way.

Noah Gragson also finds bliss in building

Late last year, William Byron publicly declared his love for Legos. At that time, he had stamped his way into the Championship playoffs with six wins and had his indoor hobby to calm him down. The Hendrick Motorsports star took pride in his Lego building and compared it with driving. “I feel like the muscle movements in my hands are kind of like driving.” This year, Byron featured his hobby in the Netflix series “NASCAR: Full Speed”. And that gave the impetus to veteran driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. to get hooked on Legos, which he blamed Byron for.

Now Byron’s SHR rival has also joined the bandwagon. Tony Stewart roped in Noah Gragson last year, and the latter has sparkled ever since. Gragson has already secured a seat in Front Row Motorsports, and with seven top-ten finishes, he chose to take a breather during the Olympic break. Both Byron and Dale Jr. would vibe well with his newfound hobby. Gragson recently said: “I got into Legos like a month ago. Never thought I’d be 26 years old into Legos. Here I am, a full-on addiction – spent way too much money on these things. But I just come home from work, I sit down at the table.”

Then Noah Gragson offered a detailed description of the Lego goodies he has stacked at home. “We also have some more of the Legos that I’ve already built. So we got a bunch of F1 cars – Jacob, our tire guy in the 10 team, built this one. We got Pac-Man that moves…so the inside is functional. I got the lighthouse, which has the lights in it…Matt, our engine tuner on the 10 car built this Empire State Building. We also got this guy, Lego guy…and then it got a little Lego guy inside…I got the Mini Cooper truck, so I had to get a little Mini Cooper.”

These are just some of his enormous collection. But Noah Gragson let us in on the one that he fancies the most. “Probably the one I’m most excited for…right here. Lego Titanic – 9090 pieces. So, pretty cool detail with this.” With this builder’s paradise at his fingertips, Gragson delivered his verdict. “I love building my Legos, I have a lot of fun with it…Who knows, maybe next time you guys come see me, I’ll have a bigger collection.”

Besides taking inspiration from fellow Lego builder Dale Jr, Noah Gragson also engaged in a friendly contest with him.

Who can build it faster?

Lego-building is a game of relentless patience and meticulousness. So some projects may eat up a lot of your time. Yet Noah Gragson like that, as he admitted that the gigantic Titanic set is his favorite. However, he is not alone in his choice, as Dale Earnhardt Jr. also owns a similar set. Dale Jr. recently admitted to buying the Millennium Falcon set, which comes short of his Titanic set, boasting “A lot of pieces…thousands.” Even his wife Amy was annoyed with The Titanic taking up a big place in her home.

Yet Dale Jr still keeps it, and Noah Gragson is all the more excited about that. The No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing driver is currently preoccupied with another set. Even then, he threw a challenge at Dale Jr. – who can build the Titanic set first. “Let’s see who can finish first. $1 bet. You have a head start too, since I haven’t started mine yet. Building home alone house currently.”

Let us see who prevails in this breathtaking face-off. Yet both drivers can draw inspiration from William Byron, who appeared on a 2022 episode of “LEGO Masters” on FOX. Byron offered feedback to contestants as they attempted to build and design race cars out of Lego blocks. So who else to turn to rather than the master?
