Did Cole Custer just dig his own grave by provoking AJ Allmendinger before Phoenix?

The drama between Cole Custer and AJ Allmendinger took an interesting turn this weekend, one that could have big implications as the championship battle heats up. After the two drivers tangled on track, it was clear that Allmendinger wasn’t thrilled with Custer’s actions. As reported by Jordan Bianchi, Allmendinger was furious in the aftermath, venting with a heated outburst: “It’s f—–. God——. We’re destroyed.” But while AJ’s initial reaction showed his frustration, his follow-up comments hinted at something even more intriguing.

When Custer made a smug comment that AJ had wrecked himself in the incident, AJ’s response was calm, almost ominously so. With a shrug, he simply said, “Can’t wait to get to Phoenix.” That line might seem harmless on the surface, but for anyone following closely, it carries a lot of weight.

AJ Allmendinger is already locked into the Championship 4, which means he doesn’t have much to lose at Phoenix. But Cole Custer? He’s still fighting to secure his spot. If Custer manages to make it into the final championship showdown, he might find himself facing a new problem. Allmendinger could be lying in wait, a potential roadblock that Custer created by provoking him in the heat of competition.

With one small shove on the track and a smug comment, Cole Custer might have made an enemy in the worst possible place. Allmendinger’s “Can’t wait to get to Phoenix” might be more than just a comment—it could be a veiled warning. If he decides to make things difficult for Custer, he could jeopardize Custer’s championship chances in a heartbeat.

As Phoenix looms on the horizon, Custer may be left wondering if his path to the title just got a lot more complicated. In NASCAR, rivalries are inevitable, but sometimes they cost more than a single race. This one might just cost Custer a championship.

In an exclusive Newsweek interview, AJ Allmendinger shared a glimpse into his game plan as he heads into Martinsville, already clinched for the Xfinity Series Championship 4. Securing his spot in Phoenix with a strong season and a recent Vegas win, Allmendinger’s focus is on keeping up his momentum without the usual pressure to advance. “I love to challenge myself,” he shared. “I’m always going out there to be my best for the team.” While Martinsville is known for its chaos, AJ felt a bit relieved to be approaching it without the usual stress of needing a win to stay in contention.

That said, Martinsville’s iconic grandfather clock trophy isn’t something he’ll pass up lightly. “There’s still a trophy to win,” AJ said, adding that he’s always dreamed of claiming one. He’s prepared for a battle at the short track but admits the energy is different for drivers fighting to secure their spot in the championship round. “You don’t really want to piss anybody off going into Phoenix and make any enemies,” he said.

With Phoenix on the horizon, AJ is also mindful of keeping things smooth for the final showdown. He’s been honing his performance all season, even experimenting with strategies like the one that almost landed him a win at Homestead. “We had a top-three car,” he noted. “The finish doesn’t show that, but the speed we’ve had these last four weeks really has me pumped.” As he looks toward Phoenix, AJ is aiming to finish his season on a championship high, but he’s keeping it measured, knowing that a cool head could be just as powerful as a fast car.
