There is a baby on the way at the Stewart household and both parents are making adjustments. Tony Stewart decided to step away from NASCAR only to take his wife’s position in the NHRA. Leah Pruett, who has been drag racing since 2013, wants to get back into the game as soon as she can. And with her husband reserving her spot by being her substitute, she has the option to get back into a car once the baby is old enough.

Unlike in NASCAR, where Tony Stewart has become a household name, the NHRA is not working out for him like he would want it to. The Stewart Haas Racing co-owner has been on a slump and it doesn’t look like it’s getting better. Tony Stewart has been on a losing streak where he has not managed to win a single race in his last 16 attempts. His wife, on the other hand, is quite a consistent winner, as she has bagged 12 NHRA Top Fuel national event wins during her career.

Tony Stewart is known to be a driver with multiple disciplines. It was not only NASCAR where he has proved himself in the past, as he is quite popular in the IndyCar scene too. Although he is quite well-versed in drag racing, his recent race results say otherwise.

Although he is driving as a replacement for his wife, he needs to show that he is keeping the team afloat while Pruett gets done with her maternity leave. Recently, a post on X revealed that Tony Stewart and his team, the Mahindra USA crew “ran a 4.299 ET at 220.48 mph in Round 1 and lost to [Doug] Kalitta’s 3.894 ET, 306.67 mph run.”

While defeat is often associated with feeling low and ashamed after the race, it is to be noted that Tony Stewart was up against one of the best drivers the sport has to offer.  The 60-year-old drag racing veteran has won 52 races in his NHRA Top Fuel drag racing career.

Losing someone with so much full-time experience is understandable, but it has been frustrating for Stewart nonetheless. There are a lot of differences between drag racing and NASCAR, the main one being the length of the race and other factors like how fast the cars go, for how long.

Leah Pruett wants to get back into drag racing when she is ready and according to Tony Stewart, she wants to race against her husband. This was revealed in an episode of The Pat McAfee Show. So let’s take a look at what that was about.

When Pruett is ready, she wants to come back and win more races in the Top Fuel Series. But instead of simply taking her spot back from her husband, she once suggested that they fund another car. Tony Stewart analyzed the situation and then explained, “It’s a terrible idea on paper, and it does not make sense because if you beat your wife, you get stuck on the couch for eternity.”

Judging from their NHRA records, it might just be Tony Stewart who might lose to Pruett and in that scenario, the husband explained that he will “have to look at yourself [himself] in the mirror twice a day and go, ‘I got my a-kick by my wife.’” While this is just a part of the problem, the social pressure of his friends saying that he got beat by his wife will add to his suffering.

These have just been floating talks so far as Pruett is not yet ready to return behind the wheel. With that said, what is your take on the couple driving a car each against each other at NHRA? Is this something that you would like to see? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
