Back in January 2023, SRX Racing let everyone know they’d be hitting the pause button on their fourth season, originally scheduled to light up the track for six weeks starting in July. For the past three summers, they’ve been all about those consecutive six-week sprints, but they made it clear they weren’t closing the shop or calling it quits.
The announcement dropped just four days after SRX Racing co-founder Ray Evernham scooped up the assets and the name of the old-school International Race of Champions (IROC). Fast forward to now, and Tony Stewart‘s insider is back at it, stirring up some excitement by teasing what’s happening behind the scenes in the SRX garage.

The SRX Racing series actually hit the ground running, with its second season airing on CBS and its third season making a splash on ESPN. Over the past three years, champs like Stewart, Marco Andretti, and Ryan Newman have taken home the title, with Stewart, the co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, snagging the most wins. Fans were buzzing, thinking the pause on the SRX series might be setting the stage for the IROC’s big return, planning to hit the track in 2024 with those iconic IROC race cars. But, as it turns out, the two series don’t really overlap.
Yet, recently, the anticipated return of the SRX Racing Series again started when Tony Stewart’s insider, Donald Hawk, stirred up the fanbase with a tweet. He shared a snapshot of the SRX garage with a caption that got everyone talking: “What in the @SRXracing world is happening here hmmm maybe I need to dig deeper……” Now, fans are left guessing if there’s some change in plans for Tony Stewart’s series.

However, according to Evernham, the decision to postpone the SRX Racing Series was heavily influenced by TV ratings. He explained, “It still didn’t rate the way that it needed to on the weeknight. Everybody thought it was a great idea, but you’ve got to raise the kind of money that it takes to do a program like that; it’s got to have a pretty big viewing audience.”
Regarding IROC, Evernham still sees a spot for the kind of motorsport spectacle SRX offers, but he’s quick to mention that times have changed, along with the appetite for motorsports. The shift might mean there’s not enough buzz to bring back IROC. Hence, the vibe is that SRX Racing enthusiasts would need to rethink and strategize for the series’ future if they intend to keep it from fading away. It seems that’s exactly what they are doing.
Hopeful fans are keeping their fingers crossed for Tony Stewart’s short-track series to make a comeback
