Rick Hendrick and Jimmie Johnson Credits: Imago
When Jimmie Johnson hung up his full-time driver’s helmet, many expected the seven-time champion to ease into retirement. Instead, he’s plotting something far more ambitious—building the next NASCAR empire with his team, Legacy Motor Club. Standing in the shadow of giants like Rick Hendrick’s billion-dollar motorsports organization, Hendrick Motorsports, Johnson knows that on-track performance is only half the battle. The other half? Creating a commercial powerhouse capable of financing championship-winning cars for decades to come.
“It’s going to be hard to go and compete against Rick Hendrick. It’s going to be hard to compete against Joe Gibbs or Mr. Penske,” Johnson admitted on the Racing Writer’s podcast recently. “They have some deep pockets.” The numbers tell a sobering story for Legacy Motor Club—just one win and five top-5 finishes in three seasons since Johnson joined as co-owner. For a driver accustomed to dominating Victory Lane, the slow climb from the middle of the pack has required a strategic pivot.

Jimmie Johnson rekindles old partnerships as Legacy Motor Club adds firepower
That pivot came into sharp focus this week when Legacy Motor Club announced a game-changing addition to their leadership team. Dean Kessel, a heavyweight in motorsports marketing with over 25 years of experience, has been appointed Chief Marketing Officer. This isn’t just another executive hire—it’s a calculated move that speaks volumes about Johnson’s billion-dollar ambitions.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dean to Legacy Motor Club,” Johnson said in the announcement. “Dean’s extensive experience in motorsports, brand development, and corporate partnerships will be instrumental in driving our marketing and fan engagement initiatives to new heights. I had the pleasure of working with him through the Lowe’s, Sprint and American Legion partnerships, so to say Dean is the perfect fit for this role is an understatement.”
Dean Kessel, who played a major role in Sprint’s NASCAR sponsorship back in the day and guided the Lowe’s sponsorship (connecting it with Jimmie and naming Charlotte Lowe’s Motor Speedway), is now Chief Marketing Officer of Legacy Motor Club.

What makes Kessel such a strategic acquisition is his remarkable track record. He managed Sprint’s $100 million annual NASCAR sponsorship program and, most significantly for Johnson, negotiated the transformative partnership between Lowe’s and Johnson back in 2001—a relationship that would fuel seven championships and redefine NASCAR sponsorship longevity. Kessel also secured naming rights for Charlotte Motor Speedway, transforming it into Lowe’s Motor Speedway, demonstrating his ability to craft landmark deals that change the landscape of the sport.
Most recently, Kessel served as Chief Marketing Officer for The American Legion, where he spearheaded an innovative IndyCar sponsorship with Chip Ganassi Racing that culminated in the 2023 IndyCar championship with Alex Palou. He also launched a groundbreaking partnership with Netflix and Jerry Seinfeld in 2024 and developed the impactful “Be The One” initiative to combat veteran suicide. His proven ability to create multi-dimensional partnerships that transcend traditional sponsorship models is exactly what Johnson needs to challenge the NASCAR establishment.

NASCAR’s leadership evolution
Numerous strategic leadership changes resembling Kessel’s appointment exist throughout the NASCAR world. Steve Phelps proved his ability to grow from overseeing NASCAR’s marketing operations up to taking the presidential role in 2018, showing that marketing expertise leads to chief executive competence. Steve O’Donnell climbed NASCAR’s business ladder from his role as Chief Racing Development Officer to Chief Operating Officer based on how operational know-how elevates team management structures.
As Vice Chairman of Hendrick Motorsports, four-time Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon demonstrated how legendary drivers can evolve towards team leadership, which sets an example for what JJ might pursue in his career. Gordon proved more than a racing expert because he gained valuable business skills, which became crucial for Hendrick Motorsports’ enduring commercial growth. After winning championships behind the wheel, Tony Stewart converted his racing success into co-owning Stewart-Haas Racing, which led to him winning a championship as a driver and owner until the team was disbanded in 2024.
Followers of Johnson’s comeback journey will find that his Hendrick Motorsports’ pursuit has already started, even though the end of the race appears nearer than expected. Kessel has demonstrated success at making signature deals and has joined forces with Johnson at Legacy Motor Club to indicate the team’s purposeful move from its current level up to championship-contending status.
