The green flag has been waved on Geoff Bodine’s book, “All of It: Daytona 500 Champion Tells the Rest of the Story,” with its official release having the shelves on Tuesday. NASCAR buffs have caught wind of his legendary tales—be it over podcasts or through the racing circuit’s rumor mill. Geoff had also tipped his hand before about the treasures tucked within the pages of his book.

Yet, in a heart-to-heart on NASCAR Live, he peeled back the layers of the deep-seated drive and inspiration that fueled this literary endeavor. Geoff, a titan on the track with a Daytona 500 win and 18 NASCAR Cup Series victories under his belt, has long flirted with the idea of laying it all out there in a memoir aptly named “All of It.”

During a chat on NASCAR Live, Geoff Bodine, the speedway sage with a Daytona 500 win to his name, shed light on what drove him to share his story in black and white. Apparently, the driving force, he revealed, was his faith. He recounted how his belief played an important role in steering him through tough times, particularly highlighting a nail-biter during the 2000 NASCAR truck race at Daytona.

And then, diving deeper into his biography, Geoff shared that the book starts with a lap around his career, that eventually zooms into the NASCAR universe, sketching out his experiences within the arena. “I’m not trying to run anyone over with a bus, don’t aim, but you might be able to figure out who it was. But then it goes into my faith, personal and professional. […] The times I thought about doing something really bad, and he kept me from doing it, so that’s the main reason I wrote that book was to get people to read- I was breaking stuff and learn about it.”

It seems he believes the book is not just for racing aficionados but for anyone curious about the sport, offering a pit stop to consider the importance of faith and embracing a higher power.

However, at the same time Geoff made it clear that while his faith is paramount, he’s no stranger to the rough-and-tumble of racing, including the strategic nudge here and there. He also touched on how the quest for equality on the track has, in his view, thrown a wrench in the works for the seasoned pros of his era.

Geoff Bodine cast a nostalgic look back, yearning for the days when the racetrack was a tapestry of unique styles and Dale Earnhardt ruled the roost. Now, he laments, the thrill seems to have been dialed down, with all cars appearing as though they were churned out from the same mold.

He shared that tweaking the NASCAR Cup cars of today is not as much possible. To the old-timers, that’s taken the wind out of their sails. Back in the day, the drivers thrived on innovation and Bodine was always on the hunt to dream up something better. Sure, NASCAR might slap it down, and boy, did they ever, but that was all part of the dance. That quest for improvement was the heart and soul of racing. Nowadays, that spirit’s been shackled.

Geoff pointed out that the current rulebook is tighter than a drum. Step out of line by a hair, and you’re in the hot seat. The scrutiny these cars undergo is like searching for a speck of dust in a desert. “They’ve taken a lot of fun out of it, but it’s big business. It’s more business than fun,” he opined.

This, Geoff believes, is why there’s been a noticeable uptick in aggressiveness on the track; with everything so evenly matched, pushing the envelope becomes the name of the game.
