Denny Hamlin was the happiest man on NASCAR to hear that Ross Chastain’s game-breaking move was banned. Of course, he lost his shot at the championship of 4 because of that wall-riding move. But he pointed out another $300,000 worth reason, why that move needs to be banned.

NASCAR finally made Ross Chastain‘s ‘Hail Melon’ move illegal. It wasn’t a surprise because everyone pretty much knew it would get banned sooner or later. But it was still a significant change to the rules, and there was no one happier about it than Denny Hamlin, of course, as he was affected by it the most.
He recently talked about the new rule changes in his Podcast, Actions Detrimental, “You know the biggest one? Obviously, they got the most pub[publicity] was kind of the wall riding that Chastain did.”
He started by explaining the reason why it was necessary to ban it, as he talked about the price of the cars, “I mean, from the car owner standpoint, that was a must. I mean, those cars are nearly $300,000 or more.”
That’s quite the cost. But on top of that, there’s another big reason which is just how much of an advantage it gave him, “Look, if you look at the time he gained, which was about 3 seconds or so it was gonna force the field to destroy their car on the last lap to not get past you think it would be if there was no rule you think. Everyone would know.”
Of course, there was no one affected by it more than Hamlin, and that’s another big reason for why he’s happy. “I’m glad that it’s over with. I’m tired of seeing it. It affected me.”

Unlike Denny Hamlin, NASCAR was more worried about the safety
Denny Hamlin had different reasons for the changes, from car prices to his loss. But NASCAR had a different thing in mind. According to rule 10.5.2.6.A, “Safety is a top priority for NASCAR and NEM (NASCAR Event Management).”

It further stated, “Therefore, any violations deemed to compromise the safety of an Event or otherwise pose a dangerous risk to the safety of Competitors, Officials, spectators, or others are treated with the highest degree of seriousness. Safety violations will be handled on a case-by-case basis.”

There is no doubt that banning ‘Hail Melon’ was a smart decision. Though it was quite fun to watch, there was no way it was safe or fair. Not to the drivers or even the car owners, as Denny pointed out. But are there any more moves like these that need to be banned?
