The NASCAR Next Gen car is a huge makeover from its previous iterations. It’s been an attempt to rekindle the image of the stock car that resembles an on-road consumer car, along with other major changes. The 2023 season did see the new car in action, and it has lived up to its billing. It’s not just the aesthetics, sheer power, or closer resemblance to an on-road car that makes it stand out. Its operational prowess makes this car a beast that can pretty much do everything apart from rally cross-like maneuvers.

The Next Gen car particularly impressed 2022 Cup Series champion Joey Logano. During the recent SiriusXM Radio show, Logano was asked about his opinion on the Clash and its new venues going into 2024. However, in trying to explain his stance about the Clash venues, he coincidentally heaped praise on the Next Gen car. But what was so special about that car that prompted Logano to term it a “tank?”

The major change that NASCAR has brought in recent years is a new race car. It is believed to provide a level playing field for all the teams and manufacturers, but Logano believes it’s much more than a regular stock-race car. The 33-year-old event went on to suggest the car’s sheer and wild capabilities, speaking on the radio show.

He said, “Where we are now in LA Coliseum but it’s been three years. Maybe it’s time for something different and bringing it somewhere else(…) I don’t know, it’s not my decision to make. And I’m not sure I have an opinion on it either. But I do know that we can race anywhere now, on any surface. Like, bring it on.”

“Besides jumping these things, we can do about anything. We’re not going to be rally crossing jump these things but we can do pretty much anything with these race cars. It wouldn’t have been possible with the old car. But now, this thing’s a tank and we can go do whatever we want with it.”

The video of Logano confronting Ty Gibbs was possibly the most entertaining aspect of a dull and toned-down Clash event. The Penske driver could well have clinched a podium finish, but thanks to the constant tussle on the final few laps by Gibbs, that didn’t materialize. Frustrated with the on-track duels and constant bumps and bashes, Penske’s No. 22 relayed his message to Gibbs that he would remember this. Thus sowing the seeds for an exciting rivalry for the 2024 Cup Series season.

“Now where do we go from here, I don’t know. We had a conversation, he said all the right things; his words don’t mean nothing to me any more. So I’m not going to talk to him. But I don’t really know the next thing to do. I don’t know how to handle it from here. I don’t want a back-and-forth match but I’m open to do it.”

As far as the rivalry between Logano and Gibbs goes, it’s a treat for the fans and spectators. However, being caught up in this altercation, the Penske star might be missing out on the bigger picture, which is to contend for the championship.
