Every time a Cup Series race takes place on a road course, the concerns over track limits and the subsequent penalties for the offenders also come with it. This was also the case after last Sunday’s race at the Circuit of The Americas. While talking on this subject, Freddie Kraft, the spotter for Bubba Wallace, disagreed with fellow spotter Brett Griffin over NASCAR implementing certain things to reduce such incidents.
In a recent episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, Brett Griffin reacted to NASCAR consistently penalizing drivers for violating track limits, which led Wallace‘s spotter to talk about the driver who has been the unluckiest in this regard.
“Ty Gibbs got that penalty probably six times. He got it in practice, he got it in Xfinity practice, he got it in Cup race, he’s not a fan of that penalty, I guarantee you,” Kraft said.

Brett Griffin argues NASCAR should put measures in place for track violations
Kraft’s point about Ty Gibbs led his fellow spotter Brett Griffin to share his take on NASCAR penalizing drivers and how it differs from other sports. He claimed that if a driver screws up when it comes to keeping their car on the racetrack, there should be a penalty.
“This is racing, this isn’t football. If you step out of balance, referee stops the game and you re-rack them,” he added.
Having made his point about the consequences, Griffin claimed that adding turtle curbs as they did in the race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last season isn’t perhaps the solution to the problem.
“For me, if you get out of balance in a racecar, there should be a penalty. It shouldn’t be a penalty from the tower, it should be a penalty from, ‘You screwed up. You’re not gonna be able to do this and go faster through this section.’
“For me, not having parameters around that area, the track, and allowing them to be able to ‘shortcut it,’ it shouldn’t even be a thing,” he added.
But this point from Griffin was where Kraft stood against him.

Bubba Wallace’s spotter claimed that just because they had “curbing measures” such as they did at Indy last season, putting them on all road courses doesn’t make sense.
“You put stuff like that; you end up destroying racecars. You end up ruining other people’s day,” Kraft argued. “Now you’re gonna ruin five guys’ day because Ty Gibbs made a mistake?”
He added, “It’s a double-edged sword but I think if you start a turtle or a wall or something that can find them there, one guy’s mistake is going to ruin the day for multiple guys, I don’t think that’s fair.”

Kraft claimed that it’s not as if “it can’t happen,” but he wonders if this is a “necessity.”

“I’m all for making it so you can’t go fast. But I don’t think we need that thing we had at Indy,” he added.
