The race at Kansas Speedway witnessed a disappointing end for the Hendrick Motorsports fanatics. While the last lap of the race saw a back-and-forth between two close friends, eventually it was Kyle Larson who lost his lead to Denny Hamlin. Much credit goes to the 23XI Racing co-owner for some impressive racing.
Hamlin was destined on his path, calculated and precise, avoiding the chaos and putting out a clinical performance, passing and holding his ground perfectly. It came down to the last lap where the #11 Toyota caught the Chevy and pulled off an impressive tight pass. This saw the #5 car kiss the wall as Hamlin took the lead and entered victory lane.
Speaking at the press conference after the race, the veteran driver gave his thoughts on the crowd’s reaction to his win. Pulling a last-minute heel turn stunned the audience, many of which were strongly rooting for Larson to register another win in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series.
Reflecting on the not-too-friendly crowd, Hamlin said, “Just kind of depends who’s there on the reaction you’re going to get. Yeah, I don’t have any reaction to it. Kyle is a little more popular than me, so they’re not going to like me winning.”
