At the Charlotte Motor Speedway, there was a bit of a scary pit lane incident. When Joey Logano came in for his pit stop, everything looked pretty smooth. However, all of that changed when Denny Hamlin came into the next pit box and appeared to run over one of the #22 crew member’s foot. In light of this, Team Penske tire changer Ryan ‘Skip’ Flores spoke about the incident.

He said, “Tanner sat down and Denny ran his knee over. I haven’t seen a great angle of it, but yes it went under the left rear. It sprained his MCL (medial collateral ligament), and he finished the race! I was standing there, watching him. Charlotte’s the place where you’re going to get hit. It’s the tightest pit box, anywhere we go and the pit road speed is still pretty high because its a mile and a half. I wasn’t mad at Denny, but I was also upset at the way they handled themselves. If my guy hit somebody, I’ll be over there like, ‘Hey, you alright?’. Granted those guys are all young, two guys that are suspended. Nobody even said anything, they weren’t trying to stop long. I don’t know whether they were p***ed off at Joey, but he qualified 23rd, They were just kind of p***ks about the whole deal.”

What exactly happened in the Team Penske pit box?

Admittedly, nothing looked wrong when Hamlin turned in to enter his pit box. However, things went horribly wrong when the rear wheel went over the unsuspecting crew member’s leg. To the Team Penske employee’s credit, he fought through the pain like a trooper and continued the pit stop. It was only after Joey Logano left that the pain must have really hit him. This was because the crewman limped away to recover from the injury.

In the end, poor old Logano ended up crashing out of the race in the last couple of laps. Meanwhile, Hamlin and teammate Kyle Busch wrapped up a Joe Gibbs Racing 1-2. Now, the Team Penske driver will have a chance to redeem himself at the upcoming race at the World Wide Technology Raceway.
