Amidst the ongoing debate, Tony Stewart, former NASCAR driver, and three-time Cup Series champion, passionately shared his views on the matter. He vehemently rebuked critics who scrutinize drivers’ choices and question their off-track pursuits.
This statement emerged in response to harsh criticism after it was announced that Alex Bowman would be unable to race for a minimum of 3–4 weeks due to a fractured vertebra. Bowman incurred the injury following his participation in a sprint race. Evidently, a number of individuals asserted that Bowman’s situation was akin to the predicament faced by Chase Elliott.
Tony Stewart lashes out at critics
During a recent conversation with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Stewart said, “Across the world of motorsports, drivers race hurt, they race sick. I had a death in the family, that’s my grandmother’s funeral and had to run a 500-mile race the next day. There were all kinds of adversity that we faced as drivers and teams and crew members. But you know, the same thing can happen driving to and from the race shop, you can get in a car accident there and get hurt.
“So where do you know, for people who sit there and go, somebody should or shouldn’t do something? I don’t think it’s fair. I mean, I think you have to, you only get one trip at this. You only get one opportunity to live your life and yes, it’s great to be a professional racecar driver. And there’s a lot of teams and different forms of motorsports that have stipulations on both drivers can and can’t do.”
Stewart also emphasized the importance of living life and not taking unnecessary risks, as success in different racing formats can positively influence a driver’s mindset and overall performance.
Stewart believes that NASCAR drivers deserve to enjoy life
Delving deeper into the issue, the SHR team owner also contributed his perspective on drivers’ entitlement to enjoy their lives. He contended that NASCAR drivers are ordinary individuals attempting to lead normal lives, just like everyone else. Consequently, the relentless pressure placed upon them is unjust.

During the same interview, Tony Stewart mentioned, “I mean, life is a chance every day. I mean every day you go on the street and everybody’s on their cell phones and this and that and not paying attention. People just aren’t doing their part. I mean, it’s hard to sit there and get these drivers a hard time. I feel like when they’re just trying to live their life like everybody else’s.
“We just do it in a way that you know, occasionally things can happen, but it can happen in anything… At some point you got to sit there and go, I have to live life and drivers have great opportunities to race cars, but they don’t and they’ve earned the right to enjoy their lives as well.”
🗣️ “People have to realize that you’ve got to live your life. You don’t take unnecessary chances, but life is a chance every day.”
