At 41, AJ Allmendinger is one of the most experienced drivers in the NASCAR Cup Series today. While his place in the competition might not be confirmed for the future, he has given fans more than enough reasons to cheer for him. The 41-year-old won the Roval race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway this season and dedicated it to his wife and child. His friendly and down-to-earth nature is something fans have gravitated to over the years. Recently, Allmendinger opened up about his beginnings in motorsports on a recent episode of Kenny Conversation.

It is a very well-known fact that motorsports is a tough sport to be a part of if you’re not well off. The amount of money that’s required to compete even at the lower levels is not something everyone can afford. So when someone from a humble background with no family history of racing makes it big, it’s always an inspirational story. And AJ Allmendinger is one of those people who acknowledged his parents’ decision to start his racing career.

AJ Allmendinger’s victory at the Charlotte Motor Speedway a couple of weeks ago was emotional. Not just for him, but for his family as well as the fans. The Kaulig Racing star has had his share of struggles and had to work his socks off to get to where he is today. Speaking to Kenny Wallace, the two-time Xfinity Series regular-season champion opened up about his parents’ sacrifice for his racing career.

“It started with racing go-karts. My mom was a medical nurse, my dad’s a carpetlayer. You know, it was always in the off-season, do you want rubber for your feet or rubber for your go-kart,” Allmendinger said.

This came as a bit of a shock for former Cup Series driver Kenny Wallace. The 60-year-old had no idea that AJ Allmendinger came from a non-racing background. When he asked the 41-year-old about his family’s racing background, Allmendinger revealed his parents’ sacrifice.

“My dad raced local stuff but yeah. They mortgaged our house three times to make sure that I kept racing. And for everybody listening, I paid that back. I paid all three mortgages off. Yeah, don’t treat me like, did you ever pay him back? Yeah, I paid off the mortgages so we’re good,” AJ Allmendinger said.

AJ Allmendinger’s future in the Cup Series may not be secure as of yet, but the 41-year-old has no complaints with his team. At Kaulig Racing, the veteran racer has won two Cup Series and 15 Xfinity Series races. He hopes to end his racing career with the team, regardless of the competition he is in.

Speaking on an episode of the MRN Live podcast, AJ Allmendinger revealed that it did not matter which competition he was racing in. Even if he went to the Xfinity Series, it’s not like the 41-year-old would not compete in Cup races. His plan is to stick with Kaulig Racing until the end.
