The list of NASCAR drivers who got into racing and made it to the Cup Series because they already had family members in the establishment is unending. Given the long list of drivers who took up racing because they belonged to a racing family or were resourceful, the amount of discussion done on the prevailing nepotism is quite limited. And several teams and drivers are probably fine with it because it makes the profession more convenient for them.
While NASCAR undoubtedly attracts the best of talent, not all of them actually turn out to be talented enough to make it to NASCAR’s Hall of Fame. Truck Series driver Hailie Deegan explains in an interview how nepotism exists in NASCAR and how female drivers can get more exposure.

A few days ago, Tony Stewart explained how he chose talent over money when choosing Josh Berry as the rightful successor of Kevin Harvick after his retirement. There were other drivers who could have brought better sponsorships to his team, but he still chose Berry purely because of his capabilities. While this appears to be a blatant rejection of the prevailing sport, Hailie Deegan has a more welcoming approach to it.
“So I was able to bring upon a lot of sponsors and he’s had a lot of great relationships. I was able to have those sponsors and have those relationships already built to where they kind of transferred over to my side like Ford and Monster.
“So I have got a lot of help from my dad growing up in the ranks but I think you just you need to have the financial side of it whether that’s sponsors or if it’s yours and I think at this point with racing you have to just kind of accept the family money side of it because 90 percent of those kids out there have family money paying for them, even in Xfinity. So it’s one of those things you just got to accept at this point and everyone’s like, ‘Oh, they don’t deserve that ride’ or ‘They don’t deserve to be there’ and you’re like, ‘Well they deserve it because they’re paying for it’. So what do you expect right? So I think you just need the financial backing, whether it’s your family paying for it or getting sponsors,” explained Deegan.
In a sport that has majorly male drivers, getting sponsorships must be even more difficult for female drivers. But, she was lucky enough to have a resourceful father who could help her out with funding. But, what about the female drivers who cannot fetch funding in a similar manner? Deegan has advice for such female drivers too.

The celebrated NASCAR driver has found a way to earn the funding and finances required for racing, even if some female racers do not have the financial security that Deegan’s father could provide her with.
“And I think it’s how you market yourself on social media is the best way. At least how I’ve done it is because I want to be racing without the sponsors that I have like I don’t have that family money paper racing. So I would say that billing your social media is the best way for a female to be in the racing World. It is fairly easier for a female in racing in the car world to build their social media so I think that side of it is what you can utilize to continue to start getting into racing and marketing yourself to bring Partners along. I can tell you though it takes a lot of family money to get started in racing,” Deegan revealed.

These are some pretty heavy truth bombs that were perhaps not revealed by racers this blatantly before. While NASCAR drivers are pretty popular for entering the sport through their family connections and proving themselves later on, it paints NASCAR as a difficult nut to crack for outsiders.
