Having a family legacy in the world of motorsports, drivers like Al Unser Jr., Johnny Unser, and Robby Unser have had their names embedded in the prestigious world of car racing. When Johnny Unser put his two-year-old daughter, Loni Unser, for the first time in an IndyCar, little did he know that his daughter would fall in love with the smell, sound, and everything about that incredible machine.
Having spent most of her childhood at the racetrack, be it attending her dad’s races or family reunions, Loni Unser has seen more tracks in her budding age than what other kids of her age are accustomed to. During the Mobil 1 Why We Race episode, the 25-year-old unveiled the biggest motivation behind her venturing into the realm of motorsports.

Becoming the first female driver to secure a double top 10 finish within a single race weekend at the Mazda MX-5 Cup in St. Petersburg, was something that made Loni Unser a fan favorite in an instant.
While decoding the spark that ignited the racer within, she expressed how her family’s legacy and her last name motivated her to carry on. She said, “I want to be just as successful as my family members and I know that’s no small feat but at the end of the day they’re what motivates me. Sometimes I have it in the back of my head, like yeah, I’m an Unser, I can do this.“
Loni Unser went into nostalgia about her childhood when most of her time was spent on the racetrack and disclosed, “Racing has been a part of my life since before I could remember. I always grew up going to the racetrack with my dad, our family reunions would happen at the racetrack.”

The 25-year-old then expressed the emotions running through her when her father put her into his IndyCar and said, “I was at the Indy 500 when I was 1-2 years old. I can remember my dad putting me in his IndyCar. I loved the sound of it, I loved the smells. I remember looking around thinking this is the coolest thing in the entire world.”
By the time Loni Unser attained the age of 10, she was actively behind the machine, be it driving four-wheelers on the dirt roads in Idaho or sliding the snowmobiles through the snow. However, it was during her first year at the Pike’s Peak that Unser witnessed her emotionally satisfying moment.

With a dream of becoming the queen of mountains in her eyes, the fourth-generation Unser family racer geared up in her Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport for her first-ever stint at Pike’s Peak in 2022.

Loni Unser revealed that she put everything she had learned into practice and said, “First year under my belt, it was kind of the first time that I put together my whole program, did everything behind the scenes, and then made the run up the mountain.”
Having the family’s history of dominance on Pike’s Peak, Unser witnessed her dream-come-true moment, when she successfully finished the climb and said, “When I made it to the top of the mountain I was in tears because of all that had took to get there and all that my family had done on the mountain in the past.”
