It’s been a year since Kyle Busch left Joe Gibbs Racing, his team for 15 years. The news sent shockwaves in the NASCAR community and left everyone dumbfounded. The reason behind the drastic decision was more bewildering—the team had failed to finalize a sponsorship deal for the driver after Busch’s primary sponsor M&Ms retracted from the tracks of NASCAR.

For many, the reasons behind the transfer of the veteran driver to a new team after the loss of sponsorship seemed to be spurious in nature, but it did assert the financial structure of the NASCAR teams and how the money flows within the teams. Owing to this, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kevin Harvick’s aides tried to provide insight into the structure of the organizations.

It is an open secret that the retiring driver Kevin Harvick from the upcoming seasons, will be seen in the booth of FOX as a NASCAR analyst. Apart from being an analyst, the driver will also be looking into the intricacies of his sports management company KHI Management, which provides marketing and sponsorship consulting services. It also represents drivers like Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kevin Harvick’s successor in the Stewart-Haas Racing, Josh Berry.

As a result, the veteran driver is already apprised of the intricacies of the racing world. Appearing on the tracks every weekend and parking the car in the victory lane is nothing but the tip of the iceberg. What goes behind the curtains is a different tale to tell, as Harvick’s confidant, Josh Jones spilled the insider’s secrets in his appearance in Dale Jr Download.

Speaking to Mike Davis on the functioning of KHI Management, and whether Harvick was attuned with the income of the personalities represented by his organization, to this Jones expressed, “Well, he knows everything. He doesn’t review their contracts and the stuffs, Fred and I do that but he wants to make sure that they are happy, they are making what they need like he’ll get on us and say get him more or get him this or he deserves this.”

“He wants to make sure everybody gets exactly what they want, that’s the thing, and that’s a big part of our sport, everybody wants to get what they want, but when they look at the breakdown of what the team is bringing in for sponsorships it goes back to that bonus program.”

The income of the athletes does not solely depend upon the amount printed on the pages of the contract nor does it depend on the prize money that is designated after each game. Rather it is a complicated affair that requires proper evaluation and meticulous judgement of the performance delivered by the athletes.

Speaking of which, Jones also asserted, “You can look into a contract right now and you don’t even have to look at the end where it says salary and the base pay and all that if you look at the bonus program and you see half a million dollars to make the playoffs and three-hundred thousand dollars for a win you know that, one they are not expecting for you to win and it doesn’t matter what sport that it is.”

“That’s how it is, that’s the bonus program, it’s no different than if you look at an NFL team, his contract is $90 million, well he is only getting paid 32 of the 90. He’s got to make a Pro Bowl, be the MVP, win the Super Bowl and there’s his $90 million. So my point is there is a lot of stuff that goes behind.”
