If the 2021 and 2022 seasons were put side to side and compared, there would be massive contrast between how both years turned out to be for one driver – Kyle Larson. He may not have had a terrible year, but he did fall far behind the expectations he set up with his 2021 masterclass.

But that 7th-place finish for the season hasn’t put a dent in Larson’s optimism. In a recent interview, he described how he had been enjoying the time off, courtesy of the off-season, and how he plans to race in the coming season.
Larson further elaborated on his plans for 2023, as he was asked by a fan: “What’s your expectation for the High Limit Series this year, and will you be doing more of Late Model or Sprint Car racing this year?”
Hopes for the High Limit Series
He told David Gravel, “I mean my expectations for the High Limit Series is… I think we’re gonna have a lot of teams follow it. We kind of piggybacked in a way off the Outlaw schedule so I think it helps both of us. It helps us get a car count but it also helps the Outlaws get car counts for the weekend.”
“So you can hit our stuff during the week and stick around for a day or two and go to an Outlaw race. So I think our car counts will be really good. I think our online viewership will be really good.”
He also discussed the crowd attendance aspects and said “I think most of our at-track crowds will be really good as well, I think there may be a couple that I get nervous about how the crowd will be. But hopefully, our on-track product and what we’re doing will attract some people that might not be on the fence about coming… make them do come.”

While fans would be exalted listening to Larson speak about his plans for 2023, that wouldn’t sit too well with his primary employers – Hendrick Motorsports. The team had only recently stated that more consistency would be the goal for 2023.
Larson on the other hand revealed, “As far as more Late Model and Sprint Car races this year – I’ll do more Sprint Car racing than Late Model stuff. So my Late Model schedule as of right now, I don’t have any races after June in the Late Model. A lot more Sprint Car stuff than the Late Model…”

David Gravel, possibly referencing Larson’s pullout from the Chili Bowl Nationals enquired, “Because there’s all that money available this year in the Sprint Car or what?”
Larson answered, “That’s a small reason. I mean I feel like there’s still more money to race for on weekly basis than in Late Models and Sprint Cars. Sprint Cars just have some really big events this year but… yeah I don’t know why it worked out that way.”
NASCAR drivers have experience running hectic schedules. The ability to soak pressure and high-stakes situations is the basic prerequisite to making it in elite racing sports. But the drop off in performances from 2021 to 2022 was clearly visible. How much of it was down to scheduling is for HMS and Larson to sort out.

But if HMS wants better results – 2 cars in the Championship 4, as it said – these plans might not sit too comfortably.
