As the 2023 Cup Series accelerates, the motorsport world is abuzz with speculations and controversies surrounding a certain driver. The Kaulig Racing driver, who has shown promise with five top-10 finishes this season, recently announced his departure from the team at the end of the year.
However, he surprised many by signing a multi-year deal with Rick Ware Racing (RWR) instead of opting for a high-profile move. This decision has set the NASCAR community abuzz with mixed reactions and fervent debates.

Supporting the decision is a surprising ally – Bubba Wallace’s spotter, Freddie Kraft. Taking to Twitter, Kraft defended the move, arguing that it is not a downgrade from an unknown, implying that Justin Haley’s future with Kaulig Racing was uncertain. Kraft’s statement sparked a wave of conflicting opinions from netizens. Some concurred with the spotter’s perspective, while others disagreed, citing that RWR is relatively less competitive than Kaulig Racing.
During a recent interview, Haley stated, “I think there’s a lot of uncertainty in the sport right now in the world, really. Obviously, there’s a charter agreement that’s not finalized. There’s a TV deal that is not finalized, and the election is next year. So, I think, for Matt and Kaulig racing, and where they are, obviously, he’s a businessman, and he needs to make business decisions, and Yeah, I think we were close to doing a deal. I feel like it was a probable option.”
Justin Haley says he was close to getting a deal done with Kaulig Racing, but believes in what Rick Ware Racing is doing.

Haley’s departure seemed to have happened in good faith and both sides have been anticipating the consequences from early this year. In fact, in his own words, Kaulig Racing President Chris Rice pointed out that they “knew it was coming,” leaving the #31 Chevrolet seat up for grabs. At the Pocono Raceway, Rice confirmed,
“The door wasn’t closed. It wasn’t like anybody got fired or anything like that. It was just we both had to make a tough decision (of), ‘Hey, we’ve got to move in a different direction and look at things for partners and different avenues.’ I think him making his move was because of us telling him that.”
Haley added to his enthusiasm about the transition, seeing it as a unique opportunity to take the next steps in his NASCAR career. He mentioned that the key pieces of the RWR program align with his aspirations and potential for on-track success. RWR’s new crossover with RFK has already started doing its tricks, one of the foremost being Haley’s entry into the team with veteran driver Brad Keselowski mentoring the 24-year-old youngster.

Justin Haley, currently sitting at the 21st position in the ongoing season, has had a decent run with five top-10 finishes. This includes an impressive runner-up spot at the inaugural race in Chicago. Despite this achievement, some question the move to RWR, considering it a potential “downgrade” from Kaulig Racing, which is perceived to run better than RWR. Kraft tweeted, “I have to laugh at people saying Haley “downgraded.” How can you downgrade from an unknown? There was no guarantees that he was going to be back in the 31. So while yes the 51 is probably a step back from the 31, it’s much better than the possibility of having nothing at all.”
Many fans were discontent with Bubba Wallace’s spotter and voiced their thoughts out loud. A fan commented, “It’s a down grade,” to which, Kraft retorted with a staunch “from what?”
He made the first move so of course he downgraded by choice. If they would have released him from the 31 and then he signed with the 51 he still would have been downgraded but not by choice. A downgrade is still a downgrade.
