Last week’s highly anticipated road race at the iconic Watkins Glen track was more of a bittersweet treat for Hendrick Motorsports. While their youngest driver, William Byron made a name for himself after claiming his 5th win of the season becoming a solid championship contender, their ace #9 driver failed to capture the fans’ imagination.
2020 Cup Series champ, Chase Elliott couldn’t deliver the hype riding on him as the #9 Chevy ran out of fuel and came to a halt. With more pressure on Elliott, now it’s a do-or-die scenario for the #9 driver as we head to Daytona.
As for the other 2 in the HMS camp, Alex Bowman much like Elliott, is still trying to figure out his rhythm. Kyle Larson, however, is cruising smoothly into the playoff 16 with 2 wins to his name. While the Cup Series action is headed to the crucial Speedway race at Daytona, Elliott’s teammate publically exposed the driver’s double standards.

Chase Elliott comes out as a hypocrite as his teammate reveals a lesser-known detail about him
The proud Chevy-partnered Hendrick Motorsports has seen it all in 2023. From 2 of its drivers sidelined because of 2 separate off-track incidents to its youngest sensation making the team proud.
While Elliott is at the worst end, staring up the ladder, unable to make it into the playoffs, his teammate Bowman also suffers a similar fate. Now things come down to the regular season’s last race at Daytona next week and it’s going to be make it or break it deal for both Elliott and Bowman.
Amidst all this, HMS recently dropped a fascinating clip featuring all of its 4 drivers giving their take on who among them is “Most likely to have the best snacks in their hauler?” Elliott was quick to answer the question, revealing that his #9 team is not the one to have any, deeming, his crew chief Alan Gustafson as a “heath nut.” Elliott said, “There are no snacks in our hauler for sure. Alan is a, he’s a health nut.”
However, his teammate, Alex Bowman, did not side with the 2020 Cup Series champ on this one as he said, “the #9 every time.”
While Larson said his hauler would be the one, Byron too had it on his team, saying, “like a lot of junk food.” The 2021 Cup Series champ then said, “If I’m going to pick somebody else I feel like Alex (Bowman) has always had like a fun team so I feel they would have the good goodies.”

With just 36 laps to go, the #9 Chevy was going strong until it ran out of fuel, making Elliott’s day bleak and grim. Elliott’s team relied on a peculiar strategy to push the driver for a win and into the playoffs. Unfortunately, things backfired when the driver pushed the driver beyond the limit as it ran out of fuel and came to a standstill.
The strategy to push the car to gain an advantageous position proved to be a costly move as the driver finished the race 32d, while Byron pranced into action, capitalizing on the opportunity to get himself his first road course win. Much like last week’s race, Elliott fans went on a blame game as they bashed Elliott’s championship-winning crew chief for the poor strategy.
Surprisingly, Joe Gibbs Racing veteran and Elliott’s Charlotte adversary, Denny Hamlin had Gustafson’s back. Highlighting the radio conversation in the #9 car, Hamlin put out a valid question. Speaking on Action Detrimental, Hamlin said, “It’s hard not to throw someone under the bus here except for the entire team. People want to pin this on Alan Gustafson. You can try. He is the leader. He’s responsible.”

“But where’s Chase Elliott in this? I mean, he’s experienced enough. If Chris, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t say. If Chris Gabehart said to me flip your switch and then come a third time by, I immediately would have said, are you? That’s not right. I would have said that’s not right. It’s not the third time. I can’t go that far. I know I cannot go that far. That’s just… that’s elementary,” said Hamlin, who publically highlighted the lapse on the driver’s part.
