Earlier this week, Jimmie Johnson made a much-awaited announcement on Dale Earnhardt Jr’s podcast. He revealed his paint scheme for NASCAR‘s throwback weekend at Dover International Speedway next month, with a tribute to Dale Earnhardt, and Richard Petty.

Earnhardt Jr. gave his reaction to Johnson honoring his father and called the tribute the ‘most Jimmie thing ever‘.

Jimmie Johnson speaks about his throwback scheme

The paint scheme for Johnson’s car during the labor-day weekend race is a combination of cars and schemes used by both Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.

The top of Johnson’s car will feature the scheme used by Petty in the 1970s. The sides of the car will be similar to that used by Earnhardt. Interestingly, Johnson, Earnhardt, and Petty have all won seven NASCAR Cup Series titles.

Jimmie Johnson spoke about the tribute, saying that it is a fitting one to do in his last full-time season in NASCAR.

We’ve been sitting on the idea and obviously with it being the final year, it’s so appropriate. I’m glad we saved it because it’s just fitting and right to do,” Johnson said on the Dale Jr. Download.

‘Just feels right’, says Johnson

To play with the scheme, it was split in a few different ways. Once I sent you (Dale Earnhardt Jr.) the text on it, I think we were able to really fine-tune the attributes that each paint scheme kind of had in them. Another tweak I just love is the 48 (on the sides) is leaning like the 3,” Johnson said further.

One of the roof it has Richard’s fonts for the 48. So in a week, we kicked it around for a while and really dialed it in. I think it looks awesome. Its the right thing to in a way and it just feels right,” he added.

The race at Dover could also be Johnson’s last as a full-time driver in NASCAR. The September 6th race is the last race before the playoffs begin. Johnson has a chance of making it into the playoffs with three more races to go in the regular season.
