Driving the iconic black #3 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, Dale Earnhardt was one of the most fierce drivers on NASCAR’s ovals. Known for being highly aggressive, he wasn’t shy to trade paint with fellow drivers. Nicknamed the ‘Intimidator’ for his zealous on-track actions, Dale Sr was feared by new and veteran drivers alike.
While there are plenty of stories detailing Dale Earnhardt’s intimidating interactions, NASCAR legend Donnie Allison recently spoke about an old altercation with Dale Earnhardt, that left fans baffled.

A part of the ‘Alabama Gang’, Donnie Allison raced sporadically in NASCAR’s Winston Cup Series from 1972 until 1988. Inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2009, Allison competed alongside the revered Dale Earnhardt. While other drivers were intimidated by Dale Sr, Donnie Allison held his own against the Intimidator.
Speaking on the Dale Jr Download podcast, Donnie Allison revealed how he once stood up to Dale Earnhardt Jr’s now-deceased father.
“I was very very good friends with Dale Sr. I had a very big mess up with him one time. I was at Charlotte Motor Speedway, first year over at Richard Childress and he run into me about to start finish line practice. And he hit me pretty hard,” Donnie Allison said.
“Well when I came in and went in my pit area, my guys knew something was wrong. They didn’t know what cause I never said anything about it. Well, I had to go around the tires like this to get down there. When I got down there, Dale was getting out and has one leg still in the window, other leg on the ground. He’s getting ready to step out the car and Big Chocolate (Danny Myers) he’s about to jump in there and I said, ‘You stand right there, I ain’t coming to talk to you, I’m coming to talk to Dale.’”
Revealing how he intimidated Dale Sr, Allison said, “Well I said, ‘Dale, let me tell you something,’ I said, ‘if you ever run into me in practice again like that, Imma wreck your a** out, Imma beat your a**.’ He said, ‘Woah, woah, woah!’ I said, ‘You heard what I said’, and I went back to my garage.”
“An hour or two hours later, he comes down there and he says, ‘Are you cooled down? Can I talk to you now?’ I said, ‘I’ve been cooled down,’ and I said, ‘Dale there’s no sense running somebody in practice like that’. He didn’t just bump me, he ran into me.
He said, ‘I didn’t mean to do that’. I said, ‘Then pay attention to what the hell you are doing’. We never ever ever had a problem after that, ever,” the NASCAR legend added.
