Denny Hamlin has long been known for his prowess on the track. However, do you know if he’s smarter than a fifth grader? Well, you’re about to find out. During the latest episode of his podcast, Denny Hamlin got lost in a linguistic conundrum that left him, his co-host, and fans puzzled. Also, Hamlin’s aspirations to own the Southside Speedway, as suggested to him by Dale Earnhardt Jr, come into the picture.

While Denny Hamlin is accustomed to racing at breakneck speeds, he found himself in an unexpected situation during the recent episode of his podcast, Actions Detrimental. As he was going to talk about the RFK Racing drivers Brad Keselowski and Chris Buescher, something stopped him in his tracks and he spiraled down into a long detour.

Close to the 1-hour mark in the podcast, Hamlin was going to talk about the RFK drivers. But as soon as he started, he got stuck, as he couldn’t find the right word that suggested something that gets repeated on a weekly basis. He then went down the rabbit hole to find the exact word and revealed an interesting story from his past.

“Keselowski, him and Buescher are just as … is perennial the right word? What does perennial mean? I feel like it’s…” Hamlin asked for help to get the right word.

“Like an adjective. Cuz you go like perennial flowers,” Travis Kelce added.

“Tiff here with the assist. Means it happens often, right?” Hamlin asked. “Every year,” he got the response.

“Oh, is that why those plants are called perennial?” Travis asked.

“That’s not the word I’m looking for, then. What happens if it’s every week? Is there another word I am missing? Alright anyway, the RFK cars, the 17 and the 6 are weekly third or fourth-place guys … Travis just … I know it’s bad, right? It’s bad I get it,” Hamlin lost track again.

“Is anyone else not fascinated that that’s why the plant is called a perennial because it keeps coming back?” Travis added. To this, Hamlin asked, “You didn’t know that?”

“No,” Travis confirmed.

“What the f**k did you do in fifth grade?” Hamlin joked. This prompted Hamlin to recall a story when he participated in a show, “I was on that show. ‘Are you smarter than a fifth grader?’ And obviously, I was not. They were asking stupid a** questions. Listen, I haven’t been in fifth grade for 30 years. What do you expect? Of course, a fifth grader knows more than I did. They just learned it last week. Like it was… I don’t know, one of the questions in the end was. Who was the Nobel Peace Prize winner that wrote the book, Lord of the Flies? Do you know?”

“Is Lord of the Flies, F. Scott Fitzgerald?” Travis suggested. “Somebody look it up,” Hamlin asked for help again. “Oh Travis, like you’ve got an inclination, you don’t have an inclination. No Way!” Travis came back with the answer, “William Golding, I would never have guessed that.” Even Jared acknowledged that he didn’t know.

Finally, Hamlin got back to what he was going to say about Brad Keselowski and Chris Buescher. He said, “Okay, so moving on from that. I am not smarter than a fifth grader. On a weekly basis, Tiff says, it’s basically the RFK cars run basically third to fifth. Recurring! Yeah, it’s a recurring theme that he and Chris Buescher are third to fifth. I mean, they’re strong, they’re just, they’re not race-winning speed that much. But they are just beginning to pick up the pieces when the top 2 have problems.”

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver hopes to revitalize Southside Speedway as a racing venue. However, he clarified that he hadn’t engaged in discussions with state or county officials regarding the matter. His vision for Southside Speedway involves more than just a racing track. Hamlin envisions a complete restoration, ensuring the facility is in top-notch shape. He believes it should not only host racing events but also diversify its offerings to include concerts, go-karting, and more, attracting a broad audience and sustaining financial viability.

“I got asked about Southside Speedway this week during media,” said Hamlin. “I guess the county has asked for proposals for those who want to run the facility to bring it back to life. Man, I hope something can happen so Southside can come back. My place with it was that, you know, they bought it for a certain amount of money. The county did, I don’t even know. I said I’ll run it, but I need ‘x’ amount of dollars to enhance the place.”
