With the way things have gone for Hendrick Motorsports this season and in the last month or so in specific, it wouldn’t have been surprising had NASCAR taken their cars to the R&D center and slapped some more penalties. At least that’s what Denny Hamlin thought.

Hamlin, who has been pretty vocal against the way Rick Hendrick’s team has navigated through the penalties imposed on them, joked that Kyle Larson‘s win at Martinsville and Chase Elliott’s comeback could very well have been soured by NASCAR.

The veteran first praised Larson who he claims has “gotten so much better.” “He was all over the place, he couldn’t hit the same line twice and he really put a lot of work in to get better at these short tracks,” Hamlin said of the #5 driver.

“And he’s with an organization that’s won, I think this is their 28th win or something at Martinsville, it’s a crazy stat but it’s great for them.”

Denny Hamlin jokes about NASCAR penalizing Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott’s car

Having praised Larson for all the gains he has made on his short track racing skills and tool kit, Denny Hamlin went on to joke about NASCAR potentially taking away his and his teammate Chase Elliott’s cars to scrutinize and penalize after the race.

“I thought for sure NASCAR was gonna take the #9 and #5 back to the R&D center to even the score on those two as well,” Hamlin said.

“But all’s good there. Looks like they got through tech, they’re not gonna be facing any scrutiny this week.”

In an episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, Freddie Kraft, the spotter of Bubba Wallace, argued that NASCAR won’t sit still after HMS got their points back post the penalty appeal. The spotter pointed towards the now changed practice of randomly selecting cars for testing, something on which #24 and #48 failed recently.

“You see is this now, NASCAR going, ‘Listen, we took a hundred points, you got them back. We’re gonna nitpick you to death until we get those 100 points back,’” Kraft claimed.  “And they got 60 of them from two of them already.”

With that said, do you think Rick Hendrick’s team will be scrutinized more every week by NASCAR or are they that far ahead of everyone else in the garage, legally, that they could end up as this season’s championship winners?
