Kyle Busch is arguably the most successful driver of his generation. Along with some excellent driving, the former Joe Gibbs Racing driver has always brought some drama to the sport. His on- and off-track antics have resulted in a love-and-hate relationship with the fans. Having said that, though he hasn’t done much lately to get into people’s heads, recently he seems to have formulated a scenario that could once again annoy NASCAR fans.

The Cup Series needs Busch as much as he needs the competition. He’s an entertainer no matter how annoying some people find him to be. However, one of his quotes from the documentary based on his career, Rowdy, saw him decode an event where he could get into the heads of fans once again.

Busch attended The Residency Podcast recently and discussed several interesting topics. One topic involved the quote from Rowdy, which is, “The thing you want to do is to be well-liked when you retire. I know right now I’m not close to retiring, and I’m not close to being liked.”

When asked about this, the 37-year-old said, “I mean I would still go by that quote. Honestly, I feel really good about my career path and trajectory; things I have done, accomplished, and all that, which has been fantastic. But the fans have not liked some of my antics over the years or my personality, my absolute hatred of losing.”

Busch then expressed his disappointment with himself as he has failed to go on a good run in the past few years. He said, “And so it’s just you know gutting when you are oh so close to winning some races and you don’t end up pulling through but I don’t know that kind of rubbed people the wrong way for a long time.” Last year was one of his worst seasons with just one win, eight top-five finishes, and 17 top-ten finishes.

Clearly, the 2023 Auto Club 400 winner is capable of better results. Busch then explained what could change perspective this season. He said, “Maybe if I go out there and dominate this season and win eight Cup Series races and four Xfinity races and five Truck races, then they’re gonna be p**sed off at me again and they’re gonna be like, ‘I hate that guy, that’s why I hate that guy, he wins too much.'”

This is the type of winning mentality that makes him a great racer. He has already had a positive start to the 2023 campaign and can go all the way. For now, he would have his eyes on accomplishing a milestone at COTA.
