In 2004, a significant change occurred in the professional circle of 2 times Daytona winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. His long-time PR representative, Jade Gurss, decided to step away from the intense demands of the racing world. Seizing this opportunity, Mike Davis entered the scene, ready to fill the void left by Gurss.
Fast forward to today, in a podcast episode of ‘Dale Jr Download,’ we hear Dale Earnhardt Jr and his co-host, Mike Davis, share an intriguing conversation about their experiences in the world of racing.

Mike, reminiscing about his previous role as a PR representative for another driver, Jimmy Spencer, contrasted the ease of crafting storylines and headlines for Dale Earnhardt Jr. with the challenges he faced working with Spencer. He candidly confessed that sometimes, when there was a lack of wins to report, he would resort to inventing narratives for Spencer, embellishing the truth for the sake of creating a compelling story.
As Mike put it,. “We didn’t have a lot of wins. So you’re looking for any nugget to put into a report and say, ‘Hey everybody, this is a news report. Our report.’ You got to write the stories and man, sometimes I just make stuff up for Jimmy. I would. He drove last week’s race without any power steering. He’s a hero, and I would just make it up. But the fact of the matter is, is it? It was fake news.”
Stating yet another example, Davis said, “‘He was driving with his knees!” Dale Earnhardt Jr, noticeably taken aback by the confession, quipped, “That’s pretty messed up.” Surprised? Well, this is just the start, as the conversation between the two got more interesting.
These revelations not only cast shadows on the narratives created around Jimmy Spencer but also beckon a wider reflection on the authenticity of the countless stories spun around the racing world. It becomes a mirror, reflecting the murky interplay of truths, half-truths, and complete fabrications. It leaves the audience questioning the ‘reality’ in the portrayals of their racing heroes. Dale Jr., clearly taken aback, decided to dwell on this revelation for a moment.

The JR Motorsports owner’s next question hung in the air like exhaust fumes: “How do we know when you’re telling the truth?” Davis didn’t flinch. “Yeah, you don’t,” he admitted, with a smirk evident in his voice. The line between fact and fiction blurred in the rearview mirror of 2003, leaving fans and insiders alike wondering if any news from that era was genuine.
“What are you embellishing now?” Junior questioned, still doubting his best friend. “What am I? No, I’m just nothing but a big, honest thing.” Mike answered, crossing his heart with a chuckle. “You back Mike in a corner, man. He gets a little shady.” Dale quipped.
“Shady is, if I, shady’s if I didn’t admit it, right? Well, this is 20 years later, right? Is there a statute of limitations on the right and bull crap notes? That’s 20 years. I feel I’m good,” Davis defended.
