NASCAR drivers are so cool, right? Driving high-powered vehicles over 200 mph and burning rubber in intense heat while fans cheer for them. Off the racetrack as well, their personal tastes and habits acquire grand status as fans idolize them. However, the same sentiments might not be found in the same household. So Dale Earnhardt Jr and Elliott Sadler‘s music tastes are not so agreeable for their family.

The two veteran drivers are retired, and presently skimming through their golden days of racing. They also delved into some extracurricular tastes, recollecting some funky melodies. But Sadler sadly recalled how his music was shunned.

Different kinds of music bands perform at NASCAR races. Pitbull, a world-famous rapper and musical artist, also co-owns Trackhouse Racing, a new yet stellar race team. Dale Earnhardt Jr has brought underrepresented talent like Tim Dugger to Iowa Speedway. But Junior’s own teenage tastes had a wilder shade. He and 13-time Xfinity winner Elliott Sadler grew up racing together and fancied some rock tunes back in their childhood days.

The two fast friends came together for an episode of The Dale Jr Download. Dale Earnhardt Jr drew a parallel between their past and present lives: “Me and Elliott, we raised a lot of hell together. And now we’re two dads just dad’n.” That reminded Sadler of an incident with his son Wyatt, which had stirred some nostalgic memories of listening to Limp Bizkit. “You were talking about raising hell in the past. I will tell this short story for your viewers.”

Sadler continued, narrating the story that revealed how old he and Dale Earnhardt Jr had gotten. “Wyatt and I were riding in the car the other day. And Limp Bizkit came on. I’m like, ‘Hey man! Me and Junior used to listen to this all the time in his black Impala man. He had the speakers in there, and it was so loud. I mean, just jams and get you pumped up!’ He looked at me and he’s like, ‘Daddy, that song sucks.’ So Sadler sadly added, “Yeah, we’re not cool anymore. We thought we was something. No cool points at all. But we had a good time.”

Although those cool times have passed, Dale Earnhardt Jr keeps dabbling in musical experiments. For example, he posted a video of his Late Model Icebreaker run in Florence this year with some popular tunes. The song he chose for the video was ‘Aerials by System of a Down,’ familiar to any metalhead. Then Dale Jr also used the app TouchTunes to play a prank on his friend, playing music from the comfort of his home while the latter was outside.

Dale Earnhardt was usually known for his intimidating tactics, but in his free time, listened to some popular tunes. He was anyway used to meeting the country’s biggest stars, appeared in Brooks & Dunn’s music video for ‘Honky Tonk Truth.’ Earnhardt even recorded his own country music song, ‘Hard Charger.’ But most prominently, he was a massive Faith Hill fan, owning a massive record collection in the basement of their house on Lake Norman that they moved to in 1981.

So much so, that he once wore a Faith Hill t-shirt under his race uniform. Dale Earnhardt Jr revealed this story early this year: “He liked Brooks and Dunn a bunch. Because he listened to that song black velvet, you know, they played that in the banquet for him one year when he won a championship. Which was only traditional country radio for a while. He listened to quite a bit of country, Faith Hill, he was a big Faith Hill fan. I think he got to meet her, he wore a Faith Hill T-Shirt one time underneath his uniform at a race.”

Evidently, both father and son had some tasteful choices in music. Dale Earnhardt Jr’s tastes may not be shared with his children, but several of his fans are definitely fans of Limp Bizkit.
