Dale Earnhardt Jr has had a lot on his plate. He has had a hectic schedule from handling the loss of his prized driver, Josh Berry to Stewart-Haas Racing to holding the fandom together with CARS Tour races in the off-season. Speaking on a popular motorsports podcast, The Money Lap Live, the JR Motorsports owner disclosed the challenges of simultaneously being a team owner and being a part-time race car driver.
Junior, accompanied by NASCAR drivers Jordan Taylor and Landon Huffman, spoke about the NASCAR off-season aspects that helped them shape the CARS Tour events. He also revealed a major announcement which will see them collaborate with renowned tire manufacturer, Hoosier. The two-time Xfinity Series winner also pointed out the fine equilibrium that keeps the competition’s integrity unaffected.

Before moving to SHR, Josh Berry and Dale Earnhardt Jr were a driver-owner duo to watch out for. They had come a long way, from starting with the JRM Late Model Program to winning tourneys across the country with new records. Now that Berry is no longer on the team, Junior has resorted to the next generation of talents like Carson Kvapil.
Junior said about his experience as an owner, “Trying to move onward, man. It’s a blast. I’m doing all that while I’m trying to also continue to be a team owner. That’s a fine line to walk right?“
“I’ve owned a car that ran the series for over a decade with Josh Berry, Carson Kvapil, and other drivers. Also, I race myself a time or two in the CARS Tour, so it’s kind of a weird dynamic. I have to be careful to make sure none of that affects the integrity of anything.“
Fielding a team in one’s own competition can raise some questions. Racing as an owner/driver in the same team is bound to invite some eyebrows from other groups. Junior has had to prevent that from happening and has only partaken in races to ease his mind.
Besides Junior, drivers like Tony Stewart and Kyle Larson have also ventured into the series ownership business. The two Cup Series champions have continued to prosper in NHRA and Sprint Car racing, providing yet another opportunity to drivers wishing for a breakthrough.

The CARS Tour events have been a great option for drivers looking to put in the off-season work. The two months of break from the NASCAR season help many drivers prepare for the upcoming season and take their time building chemistry with their respective teams. However, with Dale Jr being busy with multiple engagements simultaneously, some aspects of this series need time. Scheduling is a major portion of the complaints.
“Our drivers, our team owners, they’re like, we want the schedule now, where’s the schedule?” claimed Dale Earnhardt Jr on The Money Lap podcast. “We’re like, man, this is not easy putting this thing together. Everybody wants the schedule before the end of the year so they can start planning, and putting sponsorships together and so forth. It’s not an easy thing, and it takes a while to put together.
“That’s just a small example of all of the crazy, minute critical parts that it takes to get the series up and down the road. In the offseason, we are kind of like going over rules and what might need to be updated or changed and there’s an announcement this weekend with Hoosier. Sort of changing their direction a little bit in short track and grassroots racing that will affect our drivers and teams and all the tracks that we compete at.”

Clearly, Dale Earnhardt Jr has got his fingers in a lot of pies. But one would have to say that he is doing a fine job of not making it a sticky situation for any of the parties concerned.
