The love for ovals and street circuits might seem likewise on the outside, but when one dives deeper into the intricacies, things perhaps turn out to be quite the contrary, and this is one of the reasons why NASCAR, to woo new fans, is making its loyal fanbase suffer.
The 2023 Chicago Street race ended with a bang. However, beneath that creamy layer of success was the disapproval of fans who believed that NASCAR was losing its authenticity over time. Following the erratic schedule and the hit and trials done by them, veteran NASCAR reporter Jeff Gluck gave the management a brutal reality check.

Jeff Gluck slams NASCAR for trying to “chase something else”
With the potential shift from the default format in NASCAR and lingering questions and controversies surrounding it, former stock car racer Kenny Wallace and Jeff Gluck discussed how despite NASCAR and F1 being motorsport, have a stark contrast in their popularity and the amount of money flowing within.
Gluck emphasized that with time, NASCAR was losing its uniqueness and said, “The more you try to be something you’re not and get away from what has made you great, that can actually weaken you, in some aspects, right?!”
He then critiqued that the management is more dependent than independent in nature and disclosed, “I think that we’ve seen that with the sort of overreliance on road course racing, or dirt racing. I think maybe one dirt race a year could be okay, one street race a year could be okay.”
“But most of the people fell in love with NASCAR, fell in love with the ovals of various sizes. So, the more you kind of get away from that and try to chase something else [for new fans],” Jeff added as he resonated with the loyal NASCAR fanbase.
The veteran reporter suggested that NASCAR should focus on building their product value so well that the fans share it with others with passion and said, “I think it just comes down to like making your own product, like the best it can be, and then the people are so excited about that product that they tell their friends, ‘Hey you got to check this out!’ and their friends are like, ‘Why are they so passionate about this, maybe I need to watch this’.”
Jeff has worked for the majority of his career as a NASCAR reporter and witnessed a trend in how NASCAR tries to bring in new fans at the expense of the old loyal fans and suggests eliminating it.

Gluck said, “You can see my bald head, I’ve been around a while now, I’m getting old and we’ve seen enough times where NASCAR tries to go after some sort of mythical new fan and it always seems like it ultimately is at the expense of the current fan.”
The veteran reporter then cited an excerpt when NASCAR’s inconsiderate behavior came to the spotlight and revealed, “Let’s take the labor day at Fontana, Southern California, that’s gonna be our new thing and a few years later, maybe Darlington was the right call there and they take it back and everybody’s like yay, it’s back. But why did you leave in the first place? So there’s a lot of that. Let’s just eliminate that pattern of making mistakes and stick with what works in some ways.”
