The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series will head to the Kansas Speedway this coming weekend for the second race of this season’s playoffs. There is no doubt that playoff contenders except Kyle Larson will chomp at the bit to bag a win or finish with a fancy score. This holds true for Joey Logano and Kyle Busch. But the twist of the matter is both drivers will remember what happened 10 years ago at the same track but they definitely won’t recall it fondly.

Busch and Logano finished 11th and 12th respectively in the Darlington race last weekend. While they are decent finishing positions, the two champions would want to finish much higher. Logano is the defending Cup Series champion and would like nothing more than to retain his crown. For Busch, the final goal is to win his third Cup Series championship.

Logano and Busch are no strangers to one another. The two Cup Series champions have been in the Cup Series for a long time and have shared some great battles between them on track. But they have also been involved in crashes and a particularly nasty one between the two of them took place in 2013 at the Kansas Speedway.

Busch, who was the driver of the #18 JGR at the time, had spun into the wall at turn 4 on lap 104 of 267. The #18 would then slide down the incline of the track to the inner lane where a speedy #22 of Joey Logano was arriving. There was no way Logano could have avoided the contact as the speed of his car was too fast and at that moment, he simply did not expect Busch’s car to roll down the incline like it did directly in his path.

It was a nasty collision as neither car could not continue due to the damage sustained. Thankfully, no one was injured. According to a report by USA Today, Logano had said after the race, “I committed to gunning it to get by him on the bottom, and he came across us. At that point, you’re just lined up to him and hit him a ton. I’m fine,”

That week was an especially tough one for Busch who had spun out earlier in the race to bring out the first caution. Even during practice, Busch crashed his #18 car and was forced to take part in qualifying in a back-up car. But he did manage to qualify in fifth place.

Apart from the commendable qualifying effort, there is absolutely no part of that weekend in Kansas that Busch would want a repeat of 10 years later.

Turns out, 10 years ago, Kyle Busch was quite the troublemaker at Kansas. Rowdy got into trouble with another Penske driver that year at that track and that person was not half as calm as Logano was after his incident.

The man Busch had angered with his antics on track back then is none other than Brad Keselowski. Back then, the two were fierce rivals and aggressive drivers who would refuse to give an inch of space to the other.

The heated rivalry reached its boiling point in Kansas in 2013 as at one point during the race, Busch and Keselowski were locked in a fierce battle for track position and Rowdy tagged his rival from behind. This caused Keselowski’s car to spin, as he let out an irritated, “Really?” on the team radio, and he was unable to finish the race.

Immediately after getting out of his car, an irate Keselowski began charging toward Busch’s pit crew to make a strong point but cooler heads prevailed as he decided against taking any further action at that moment.

Kyle Busch is a calmer soul now. Busch has had a good first season with RCR so far after 15 years with JGR, claiming three wins already. On the other hand, defending champion Joey Logano has not had the season that he would have hoped for so far. The 33-year-old has only won once in 27 race starts. Consistency is the word that defines Rowdy and he will be hoping for a strong performance in Kansas on Sunday.
