There’s more to Bubba Wallace than speed and high-stakes racing. Beyond the roar of engines and packed grandstands, Wallace has a quieter passion. It’s one that most fans barely know about. Followers on his main Instagram page enjoy high-speed highlights, behind-the-scenes racing moments, and life in the fast lane. However, tucked away in a smaller photography account with just 12,000 followers, Wallace showcases a different world. One captured through his own lens.

Bubba Wallace opens up about his love for photography

In a recent Instagram post by NASCAR, Bubba Wallace let fans into a side of his life that’s far removed from the racetrack. Captioned “Behind the lens with Bubba Wallace,” the video showcases the 23XI Racing driver assembling his Sony A7R IV camera and sharing how he got into photography. He also revealed how photography became a counterbalance to racing. More than a creative outlet, it’s taught him patience – an essential trait for life on and off the track.

“What got me started is my dad’s old Nikon,” Wallace explained, reminiscing about capturing moments at the track. Since then, photography has become more than a hobby. It’s a creative outlet that helps him balance the intense world of racing. “It teaches you a lot of patience, which is what you need in a race car,” he added.

Traveling at speeds over 150 miles an hour and keeping your cool when things don’t go your way or waiting for your time to strike are key aspects of racing. Similarly, in photography, waiting for the moment to capture a perfect shot, or keeping your cool when every shot feels like it isn’t good enough, are parallels that Wallace probably takes from photography.

Bubba Wallace’s passion for photography is clear, as he admits to traveling everywhere with a camera in hand for the past several years. He values composition and encourages others to develop their own unique perspective. “Pretty sure there’s a lot of keyboard warriors out there that’ll tell you it’s not cool, but it’s your photo,” he said with a smile, embracing the individuality that photography brings. Wallace has always been an outspoken driver with a lot of ‘haters’ amongst the NASCAR fanbase. However, he moves on with a smile every time, knowing the only true judge of him is himself.

Photography isn’t the only creative outlet Bubba Wallace leans on when he’s off the track. Music plays an equally important role in his life, helping him reset and recharge after long racing seasons. Wallace’s love for music runs deep. It started early when his dad bought him a Roland electronic drum kit. “It was seventh grade and I had seen, on MySpace back then, Avenged Sevenfold’s ‘Unholy Confessions’. The breakdown to that song was super sick. For years, I was just always focused on the drums in those kinds of songs,” Wallace said in an interview with Netflix.

In Race: Bubba Wallace, the Netflix docuseries, fans get a glimpse of this side of him. During his 2021 NASCAR season, Wallace unwinds by drumming along to Fall Out Boy’s Sugar, We’re Goin Down. “Much respect to all the drummers and musicians,” he says, laughing. “It’s way more nerve-racking than my first Daytona 500.”

While metalcore remains his favorite genre, Wallace’s music taste is wide-ranging. He even appeared in Post Malone’s Motley Crew music video. His top band picks? “Parkway Drive is number one,” Wallace says. “Then Silent Planet and Fire from the Gods. Those guys are super relatable.”
