Earlier this year, Kyle Larson took a page out of Tony Stewart’s book. Together with his brother-in-law, Brad Sweet, they established a new racing series called High Limit Racing. Naturally, a new racing series was always going to attract attention from drivers. The latest driver to throw their hat in the ring is Tanner Thorson, who competed in the Truck Series in 2018.

The best part for Larson is that Tanner Thorson will compete on a full-time basis in the series. In other words, the 27-year-old will compete in all 60 races in 2024. The roster is fairly star-studded, with Brad Sweet competing full-time, along with many dirt racing stars. Other racers include Rico Abreu, Kasey Kahne, Chris Windom, Justin Peck, and many more.

Who is Tanner Thorson, Kyle Larson’s newest recruit?

Aside from his 11-race Truck Series season, Tanner Thorson has racked up a fair number of accolades. He is the 2022 Chili Bowl Nationals winner, as well as the USAC champion, and will drive the #88 Winged Sprint Car. In the Camping World Truck Series, Thorson raced for Young’s Motorsports, taking six Top 20 finishes, with a best run of 13th at Iowa. And now he is all set to join High Limit Racing in the No. 88.

Before the Camping World Truck Series, he raced in the K&N Pro Series in 2018, competing in one race. Additionally, Tanner Thorson took part in three ARCA Series races across the 2016 and 2017 seasons. During that brief tenure, he had a best P10 finish and finished no lower than 19th. Other than that, most of his efforts have been focused on the dirt racing arena, where he is currently thriving.

Frankly, Kyle Larson would probably have loved to compete as well, but he does have a lot on his plate in 2024. First and foremost is his NASCAR Cup Series career, and he will want to clinch a second Cup title. Secondly, he is already juggling a dirt racing campaign simultaneously.

Finally, he is expected to make his grandiose and much-hyped debut in the Indianapolis 500 in 2024. In other words, he is absolutely swamped, and throwing in the High Limit Racing Series may be a bit too much to chew off. One thing is for sure: Kyle Larson and Brad Sweet could possibly see Tony Stewart’s SRX Series as rivals. Since both fledgling series compete in dirt arenas, they are more or less rivals.

However, it will be fun to see which series tries to attract more drivers, especially from the NASCAR Cup scene. Tony Stewart already had a leg up in the competition, especially in 2023, where multiple current NASCAR Cup drivers competed, either full-time or part-time. Larson’s advantage is that his series is much longer, with 10 times the number of races as Stewart’s series.
