NASCAR may be one of the biggest motor racing competitions in the world, but they do not have the best of relationships with all of their former drivers. One such man was recently offered a management and consultation role at a short track along the coast of North Carolina. The man in question is none other than the controversial Jeremy Mayfield, who has run into a lot of trouble with the authorities in the past.

Mayfield was suspended from NASCAR in 2009, which has been lifted as of now for his alleged usage of illegal substances. Reportedly, the driver’s home was also raided by the FBI. In the aftermath of all this, he pleads his innocence in all of them to this day, but took a plea deal in 2011, which has kept him out of prison. Keeping his past aside, this exciting development in his life has brought forth a new chapter, which Mayfield definitely looks forward to. It almost feels like homecoming to him!

Jeremy Mayfield will now be a part of the team at Carteret County Speedway and his role will include overseeing competition, marketing, and community partnerships as per a report in Sportsnaut. He might have been away from NASCAR for several years now, but racing has not left the former Cup Series driver’s blood. The 54-year-old still takes part in several short-track events. So it would not be a surprise if fans saw him participate in races on the track that employs him.

“I grew up racing at short tracks so Carteret feels like home to me. I’m looking forward to working alongside Bob Lowery and the great team he already has in place to help elevate an already exciting racing program,” he said in an article on the track’s official website. The new racing season has not yet begun at the Carteret Speedway but it will on Saturday with the Islander Hotel & Resort’s JumpStart 2024.

It will be interesting to see how the former NASCAR driver adapts to this new role after habing gone through some rough times. Surely his past has been a cause of pain to the driver which he opened up about, to two-time Xfinity Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr on an earlier episode of The Dale Jr Download podcast.

The way he described the FBI property sounded brutal and the aftermath sounded even worse. As Dale Jr and his then co-host Mike Davis listened to the chilling stories with their eyes wide open, Mayfield went over how the raid went and what followed in the months and years afterward.

“There was people coming out of the bushes, out of sliding door vans. All blacked out, faces covered, AR-15s. I mean just coming from everywhere. It was probably like 80-90 people,” he said. “Finally, a guy comes over and shows me a search warrant. ‘We’re looking for a stolen piece of scrap metal, like a plate’. I had probably $30,000 worth of copper on my rollback that we’re getting ready to go sell. I said, ‘Y’all can go look for it. But, this is kinda big for a steel plate’. It got worse from there. It was a long day for me.”

“I still have no idea what some of the charges were. I had 28 felonies after it was all said and done, I went to jail 5 times after that. Every month, I was going to jail for that raid,” he added. “4 counts were a minimum of 10 years a piece, I’m looking at 40 years in front of the judge. It was ‘larceny of a trailer/aircraft’, I have no idea. Still to this day, I have no idea.”
