In a conversation with Brett Griffin on the Door Bumper Clear podcast, Hocevar recalled his first-ever interaction with Dale Earnhardt Jr. The young driver vividly recounted how he sat down with his idol, filled with excitement and admiration. But Dale Jr’s first words to him were a powerful wake-up call.
Hocevar realized that he had to prove himself and demonstrate that he was better than his reckless mistakes. Dale Jr’s tough-love approach left a deep impression on Hocevar, and he felt a strong sense of responsibility to prove himself worthy of his idol’s guidance.
Remembering his first interaction with Dale Jr, Hocevar said. “Got sat down, had more conversations, Had the big piece humble pie with Dale Jr, and then I’m like whenever it clicked, it clicked and I’m like I just showed up in this guy’s shop, Idol of mine, childhood dream. And that’s the first thing out of his mouth.”
“What did he say?” Griffin asked curiously.
“He said, hey man, like when do you stop tearing sh*t up? Like that was his conversation,” Hocevar replied.
“Owners don’t like to spend money on these kinds of stuff,” TJ Majors pointed out.
“He’s like, ‘You ain’t going to do that to one of these cars, are you?'” Hocevar reiterated what Dale Jr asked him. “He’s like, man, you’re better than that. And I’m like..F**k…F**k… All I see is six-year-old me just sitting there like, I was envisioning like he was talking to six-year-old me and I’m like, I got to fix this like really fast.”
