Hiccups in the NBA Booth: Dale Earnhardt Jr’s Honest Admission Sheds Light on the Struggles

In an open and humorous exchange, Dale Jr candidly discussed the challenges of pronouncing Shane Van Gisbergen’s name correctly. He shared the amusing anecdote of Jeff Burton’s brief silence and acknowledged that the resemblance between their voices led fans to attribute the mishap to him. Dale Jr humbly accepted his share of the blame.

Here’s how the conversation went when Mike asked Dale Jr about the mishaps. Dale Jr started, “I was wondering like we kept… I kept seeing comments about how none of us were pronouncing Shane Van Gisbergen’s name right. And I am like, well, that’s got to be impossible because I think we’re all doing it differently so certainly someone’s getting it right, and I thought that that was so funny. People are so particular about those little details and I don’t know. I thought I was doing the best, but, I don’t know, you tell me.”

“Well we know it wasn’t Jeff,” replied Mike.

Dale Jr responds to this by saying, “Jeff? Jeff like shorted out. You know, at one point, he stumbled and just locked up, right, and just quit talking altogether. But the funny thing is that we sound so alike to a lot of people that people thought it was me, and so to Jeff’s credit, or for his sake, he’s only going to get half the blame for that one because I will get the other half. Anytime maybe one of screws up, we kind of get off the hook because they think it was the other one, you know.”

Mike then goes on to say, “SVG seems like the way to go if I’d been up there. I am just going to call him by the initials.”

“I though that was the lazy way to do it,” comments Dale Jr.

Mike responds with, “Well, He introduced it in the pre-race, so I was gonna go with what he said. He has it on his uniform.”

Dale then replies to this, “I know but, Steve even couldn’t get that right, talking about SVG here, and I am like goodness gracious. But you know, when you’re human and you’re flawed and you’re imperfect and you’re gonna make those mistakes right, you just gotta own it. And man… when I first started broadcasting, stuff like that would make me feel like a failure, I would take it so personal, and I feel so terrible about the job I did, but it is what it is if they don’t want me to come back next week, they will let me know.”

Joey Logano, a fellow driver, playfully poked fun at the complexity of Shane Van Gisbergen’s name. Jokingly referring to him as “hamburger” and admitting that the newcomer outperformed the competition, making them look like “fools.”

Brett Winningham tweeted a clip of a post-race interview where Joey Logano is being asked about Shane Van Gisbergen’s performance. Here’s what he said. “Whatever his name is, some Van burger, I don’t know, hamburger, he’s fast that’s all I know. He rips, and he was faster everywhere. Obviously, he made us look like a bunch of fools, a foreigner came in and kicked our b**t today so we got work to do.”

Kenny Wallace, in his show, also addressed the name challenge and shared insights on Shane Van Gisbergen’s victory, highlighting the New Zealander’s nickname, SVG.

He said, “We had a New Zealander win this race. Shane Van Gisbergen. He is from New Zealand, so they call him SVG because it’s hard to say that. He is a 3x V-8 Supercar champion, he has 80 wins. Stop and think about Jimmie Johnson, 70-something NASCAR wins.”
