With the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season close to wrapping up, all eyes will be trained on the new season. However, the Spire Motorsports team has a different reason behind wondering about their future.
Owner Jeff Dickerson told Forbes that it is vital for them to make a profit. He alluded to Hendrick Motorsports’ old mantra ‘refuse to lose’, but in his team’s case they cannot afford to lose.’
Admittedly, Spire Motorsport is practically a fledgling, compared to other teams in NASCAR’s premier division. Dickerson and TJ Puchyr even took out a $6 million loan to purchase a Cup Series charter and are seeking to take the next step.

The outfit recently purchased the Leavine Family Racing team, freeing up an extra slot for them in the Cup Series. According to Dickerson, they acted because the charter values were going up and they wanted to buy the outfit at the right time.
Secondly, Spire Motorsports needs the infrastructure to support a new car. In fact, their endgame was for the team to field a two or three-car team.

What next for Spire Motorsports?
Although Spire will move into Leavine Family Racing’s shop, they will not run LFR’s 2020 cars. This is because of their previous agreement with Joe Gibbs Racing and Christopher Bell.
Dickerson expressed his desire for two full-time cars and drivers who will be there for the long haul. To that end, they are eyeing the likes of Ross Chastain and Justin Haley, who are both familiar with the No. 77 car.

It is worth noting that Haley is the proud owner of the team’s sole victory, in the 2019 race at Daytona International Speedway. This is actually an incredible feat because the team operated on a limited budget.
2021 is going to be a year of learning and making mistakes for the Spire Motorsport team. With two top notch full-time drivers, they could be in a prime position for the 2022 season.
