It’s no secret that Spire Motorsports has been on a revamp journey since the middle part of the 2024 season. Be it sacking Corey Lajoie or hiring veteran crew chief Rodney Childers, it’s all part of their grand place to bounce back in the next season. And a recent announcement has turned heads and hinted at how Spire is making the big moves. A fairly new team, only began operations in 2018, is already planning to run with the top dogs in the Cup.
Spire’s rise to prominence has largely been tied to a powerful, and at times, silent investment group behind the scenes, a multi-million dollar company with significant financial backing and a recent connection to Formula One, of all places. But what’s even more intriguing is that Spire’s fortunes might be about to change in a big way, and it all stems from their little-known partnership with TWG Global!
Who is Spire Motorsports’ pattern in revamp?

TWG (Top Wealth Group) Global in a recent press release revealed something that caught the attention of the NASCAR community. The release announced that TWG, alongside General Motors’s Cadillac, would be entering the world of Formula One in 2026 as the 11th team on the grid. This wasn’t a big surprise—F1 has been making headlines with its expanding global reach and new team entries. What really raised eyebrows was the mention of Spire Motorsports.
The press release explicitly stated that, in addition to its F1 project with Cadillac and GM, TWG Global also “owns and operates” several motorsports properties, including Andretti Global, Wayne Taylor Racing, and, yes, Spire Motorsports. This is significant because it’s the first time we’ve seen Spire officially listed under TWG’s banner, with the company now claiming ownership of the NASCAR team. But here’s the real surprise- Gainbridge, the financial services company that took a minority stake in Spire in 2023, is a subsidiary of TWG Global.
Recently, NASCAR Analyst Eric Estepp also dwelled on this saying, “The exact wording is quote in addition to the Cadillac F1 partnership with GM TWG Global owns and operates Andretti Global, Wayne Taylor racing and Spire Motorsports. Gainbridge joining Spire wasn’t just a simple hey here’s some money put our logo on the car no that was that was an investment. Gainbridge is now very much a part of the Spire Motorsports structure we’ve known that but this is really the first time publicly we’ve heard that you TWG Global of which Gainbridge is like a subsidiary this is the first time we’ve heard them refer to themselves as the owners of Spire Motorsports. TJ, Jeff (Dickerson) obviously they’re still important people over there but they don’t own the team in the sense that maybe some people thought.”
At first glance, this all might seem like just another corporate partnership, but there’s much more at play here. Mark Walter, the founder of TWG Global, is not just any investor. He’s also part of the ownership group of the Los Angeles Dodgers, one of the most successful and profitable teams in Major League Baseball. He also co-owns the Premier League soccer club Chelsea along with owning the Professional Women’s Hockey League. And according to Forbes, Walter’s net worth is around $6 Billion. His deep pockets and connections in the sports world have already made waves in NASCAR, where Spire has been quietly assembling a powerhouse.
Over the last season, Spire Motorsports has made a series of bold moves that signal they are serious about contending in the NASCAR Cup Series. The team’s investment in drivers and staff has been nothing short of impressive. They brought in Michael McDowell, a driver with a wealth of experience and success. They were also quick to poach Rodney Childers the moment he was on the market. Childers has won 40 Cup Series races along with the 2014 Cup championship with Kevin Harvick. Childers and McDowell’s arrival is a clear indication that Spire isn’t looking to be just another middle-tier team; they want to compete at the highest level.

But it’s not just about them. The team has also been aggressive in its pursuit of top-tier talent, with Carson Hocevar joining the team as a rookie. Hocevar, who finished 21st in points in 2024, could be the future of the team if he continues to develop, having already won the Rookie of the Year, with one top 5 and six top 10s. Add to that the young and promising driver, Justin Haley, who came to the team as part of a swap between Spire and Rick Ware Racing.
And Haley’s best race finish this season in a points race came with Spire when he took P7 in Talladega. Even Estepp feels Spire is making moves in the right direction to fight the top teams. “I’m not ready to make 2025 predictions just yet but that’s what’s on Spire’s radar right now and it’s big investments from TWG Global and Gainbridge and Group 1001, that are making a lot of these big moves possible. Spire quietly is bidding to become one of the top dogs in stock car racing. We’ll see how long it takes for them to get there,” Estepp added.

The team has recently also brought in Matt McCall as the Director of Vehicle Performance. McCall was Brad Keselowski’s crew chief additionally in his time as crew chief in NASCAR. What is remarkable is that McCall is a former stock car driver himself having won 60 late-model races in the early 2000s. McCall opening about the news said, “Spire Motorsports’ upward trajectory has been impressive and I look forward to becoming part of the success. I’ve had a long relationship with (Jeff) Dickerson and I’ve known him for close to 25 years…Knowing what’s being built here and what the future looks like is exciting,”
Spire is clearly turning out to be a team that is quietly putting together the pieces to make a serious push.
