Spire Motorsports is currently in the middle of a re-vamp. The Cup and Truck Series racing organization aims to achieve silverware in the coming season. In the middle of this transition is ace driver Michael McDowell. The ownership at Spire Motorsports is planning to center the development projects around McDowell. They even got rid of their star driver Corey LaJoie, probably because they’ve had enough of him. Another significant introduction at Spire Motorsports is the coming of Travis Peterson, as the new crew chief for Michael McDowell.
Many believe the main reason behind hiring Travis Peterson is the old brotherly bond between McDowell and Peterson. The owners, however, had reasons of their own. Undoubtedly, McDowell and Peterson shed blood and sweat on the tracks for Front Row Motorsports, but the real reason Travis Peterson was brought to Spire Motorsports is certainly not this one.
The true rationale behind the reunification of the McDowell-Peterson duo

Contrary to the popular perception, the ownership at Spire Motorsports gave an altogether different reason as to why Travis Peterson was hired. The reason that they gave was blunt, and maybe devoid of the fantasy imaginations which NASCAR enthusiasts portrayed for the duo.
Talking to the official YouTube page of NASCAR, Jeff Dickerson, the co-owner of Spire Motorsports, revealed the actual reason why the racing organization has decided to change the crew chief for their new number no.7 next year. He said, ‘‘Yeah we’re bringing him in because you know he brings something different to the table than what we’ve had here. We’ve got a lof of smart guys, lof of good guys.”
However, trying to be a realist in a way, and giving the most straightforward reasoning he could, he quickly added, “Not to say Travis isn’t a good guy but Travis is a bit of a rusty nail sometimes and certainly when you look at trying to bring different people together, I think it takes all kinds and so I think we’ve had really great guy part-checked and now I wanted to you know let’s bring in somebody that brings a little bit different angle.”
Brutally honest, eh? But this is not the first time Jeff Dickerson has managed to answer the looming questions around his organization bluntly. In fact, of late, he has been quite known to provide some of the most striking details about the transition currently happening at Spire Motorsports. The most prominent questions are about the star Spire Motorsports racer Corey LaJoie.

It’s not as if Michael McDowell has been a triumphant racer in the Cup series in the recent past. The 40-year-old no.34 of Front Row Motorsports currently sits at 21st position in this year’s cup series standings. Apart from that, he is yet to register a win this year. But one thing that stands out for Michael McDowell is the experience. McDowell has been a seasoned racer in the Cup series circuit since 2008 and knows what it takes to achieve something significant at the highest level.
Additionally, the phrase ‘desperate times require desperate measures’ appears apt for McDowell and Spire Motorsports. McDowell is yet to transition from a seasoned talent of the sport to a consistent performer. Spire Motorsports, on the other hand, wants consistent wins. So, evidently, it appears to be a match made in heaven for now.
Spire Motorsports has registered their desperation publicly through Jeff Dickerson. In a recent interview with NASCAR Radio, the co-owner of the organization said, ”We have to win. Like we have to win. You don’t do these moves and not win. Right the goal for this year is to win and we still have that opportunity to and hopefully over the next course we can get into the playoffs but mm from next year we have to win we can’t do what we’ve been doing and not win.”
