So far in 2024, Martin Truex Jr has been tearing it up on the track, scoring several second, third, and fourth-place finishes in his #19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry. Despite his strong performances, he’s yet to clinch a win 15 races into the season. Sonoma, though, might just be his golden ticket.

Currently sitting fourth in the drivers’ standings with 490 points, a win at Sonoma could really cement his spot in the postseason playoffs, no matter what happens in the races that follow. But it looks like Truex isn’t just counting on speed to get him that win; he’s playing the long game, banking on tire strategy to give him the edge at Sonoma.

Back in March 2024, during a NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol, tire management took center stage, leading to a whopping 54 lead changes—a record for Cup Series short tracks. In those hectic final laps, Denny Hamlin briefly lost the lead to his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Martin Truex Jr, but snatched it back amid heavy traffic to win by 1.083 seconds. While the rest of the field was battling with tire wear, Truex used his seasoned skills to stay in contention. Looking ahead to Sonoma, it seems he was aiming for a race just as dynamic.

Fast forward to now, and with four wins at Sonoma Raceway under his belt, Martin Truex Jr is not just racing for another trophy this weekend; he’s also looking to secure his spot in defending his regular-season championship. However, Sonoma’s recent repaving may throw a wrench into the works. The familiar strategies Truex once used, like tire wear, on this track’s old surface might or might not fly this time around. While he might be wishing for a race similar to Bristol’s dynamic, he’s bracing for a very different challenge at the revamped Sonoma.

Discussing the repaved track, a wary Truex said,It’s definitely going to be a lot different than it’s been you know. I think um you know every time for as long as I can remember you come to Sonoma and you think you know worn out track, tire wear, the approach is a lot different than what it is now. Now it’s really going to be you know um pretty much run qualifying laps every lap with the tires that don’t wear out or don’t really fall off much.”

Truex Jr further explained how the new track conditions at Sonoma call for a fresh strategy. So, totally different approach I think than um than what we’ve done here at home you know at Sonoma in the past. But with that being said you know we tested out here I felt good about it and um it’s still the same course. So new challenges same course and hopefully we can uh you know we can figure out and go back up win number five here.”

While Martin Truex Jr is still in the middle of trying to figure out whether or not he’ll return in 2025, it seems, he has now gotten used to being asked about his retirement decision. Truex Jr yet again shared his thoughts on the never-ending retirement questions. Yeah, I don’t know yet. We’ll see. I think, you know, it’s never enough time in this sport because you need to start planning for next year — like now, he explained when prodded by reporters yet again about his future plans.

He knows his decision weighs heavily, not just on him but on his whole team, and he’s aiming to make his choice soon to keep everyone’s plans on track. When quizzed about whether clinching a championship in Phoenix would be the dream finish to his career, Truex admitted, That would be cool. However, he quickly added that stepping away isn’t quite on his radar yet.

Looking at his current stats and comparing them to last year’s, he’s running consistently with four top-5s, seven top-10s, and thirteen top-20 finishes—only missing that single win he had at this point last year. It looks like Truex still has plenty of fuel left in the tank for this season.
