Over his illustrious career, Dale Earnhardt Jr has made an impressive 36 starts in the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series at Michigan, notching two wins, 15 top-10s, and eight top-fives. On top of that, he clinched two NASCAR Xfinity victories and, in a breathtaking turn of events, played second fiddle in an IROC race to none other than his legendary father, Dale Sr.

The 1999 showdown at Michigan, where Dale Sr narrowly edged out his son at the finish line, remains etched in the history of racing as one of the greatest finishes. This epic face-off is a spectacle that legions of Earnhardt aficionados yearn to have seen play out in the NASCAR Cup Series.

As a nostalgic nod, NASCAR’s official account dusted off this gem from the archives ahead of the Michigan International Speedway race, reminding both new and seasoned fans of its rightful place in motorsports lore.

In fact, not only NASCAR but as per The Sale Lake Tribune, during a 2017 heart-to-heart, even Junior himself reminisced about the fierce competition, with his father pulling no punches on the track. Reflecting on this electrifying race, he remarked, “Dad drove to the bottom, so I just went around a little bit higher, and it stuck, and I got along his outside. I was going by, and he hit me.”

He nostalgically added, “It seemed like only me and him were racing each other for the win. I was very proud of that because I thought he was the best in the sport at the time. It was like beating Jimmie Johnson if he came down to the Xfinity Series. So, that was a big deal for us.”

The race’s climax saw Dale Sr eclipse his son by a razor-thin 0.007 seconds. The shared video is a poignant reminder of the cherished moments Dale Jr had with his legendary father. After the video surfaced online, even fans far and wide flocked to social media, waxing lyrical about that unforgettable duel.
