The 2022 FIFA World Cup reached an epic conclusion. Argentina defeated France 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out. In the process, Lionel Messi finally added the coveted FIFA World Cup trophy to his cabinet. Naturally, a number of Greatest of All-Time (GOAT) declarations began flying about on social media. Before long, NASCAR fans jumped into the conversation. They compared Messi to another legend that they know, Dale Earnhardt.
This all started when people wondered about the American sports equivalent of Lionel Messi winning the World Cup at 35. As it turned out, Earnhardt was 35 when he won his second NASCAR Cup Series title. Since then, he went on to prove that age is just a number, adding five more titles to his name. When he won his last title, he was 43 years old, which just sells this point even further. However, soccer players have a limited career span as the nature of the sport is such.

How did NASCAR fans compare Messi to Dale Earnhardt?
Many fans clearly agreed with the assessment that Messi and Earnhardt were legends of their craft. Some people even compared this FIFA World Cup final to the Daytona 500, one of the most prestigious NASCAR races. Earnhardt had repeatedly been trying to win the iconic race but failed multiple times. In 1998, though, he finally got the monkey off his back and clinched his first Daytona 500 win.

That's the example I used to explain Messis win today! I said if he loses it's like the million dollar flat tire at Daytona. And if he won it was like when the old man won.

The mustache alone would score 3/4 of the goals Messi has. And Messi probably doesn’t know how to drive.

In a similar vein, Lionel Messi had been trying to win the FIFA World Cup for years but kept coming up short. However, last night, he finally snatched the missing trophy and added it to his collection. A fair number of NASCAR fans pretty much approved of this comparison, calling it the ‘only correct answer’.

Without a doubt, this World Cup trophy is just another mark on Messi’s rich legacy. Meanwhile, Dale Earnhardt built his own legacy in the NASCAR Cup Series, tying with Richard Petty for the most titles. It would only be several years later when a certain Jimmie Johnson would equal his and Petty’s record.
