As a race car driver, you can face a number of issues on any given day. You can have engine issues, tire issues, and pit road issues among others. The last thing you want to go wrong is your radio but that’s exactly what happened with Martin Truex Jr and Bubba Wallace at the Talladega Superspeedway. The former Cup Series champion was extremely frustrated and when he missed his pitstop later on in the race, was livid. Those emotions were shared by his spotter Drew Herring.
Martin Truex Jr loses his calm as basic machinery fails
One of the most important elements of a motor race is the pitstop. If a pitstop goes wrong, it can essentially ruin a driver’s race. Truex was having issues with his radio since the first lap of the race and when the time came for a stop, he missed his call. Most racers went into the pits at that point and the Joe Gibbs Racing star found himself near the back of the pack when he finally made his stop. It’s hard to imagine what must have been going through his head at the moment, someone of his experience.

“So f***ing stupid,” the 2017 Cup Series champion said in a dejected tone. Spotter Drew Herring was also quite disappointed and upset with the condition of the radios, and rightfully so. It’s one of the most basic things for any race team to get right. “We were supposed to come a lap earlier. Our radios f***ing suck right now,” he said in response to his driver’s complaints.

It was overall a very frustrating day for the driver of the #19 car. When his radio was working better later on in the race, Truex said that the style of racing on the show was not to his liking either!

It’s no secret that the racing style in NASCAR has undergone a drastic change over the years. This was made a lot more evident with the Next-Gen car that a lot of drivers failed to figure out initially. However, it’s crystal clear now. The name of the game is fuel management, especially on these long superspeedways. Managing fuel is a crucial skill to have, but to do that all the time makes things boring. That’s what got under the skin of Truex.
When you’re saving fuel, you’re running a lot slower than you usually would. This takes away from the spectacle of high-octane racing. The #19 had a lot of cars ahead that were implementing this tactic, and it became extremely difficult to get past them on with pace. So, naturally Truex Jr was pissed and even came on the radio later and said, “Worst racing ever.” This infuriated some fans who said that he should retire if he could not adapt to how racing has changed.
