Logan Seavey had a challenging route to his second Golden Driller victory. Suffering from illness the night before Saturday’s pole shuffle, the former USAC Midget Series champion reclaimed his position as the race leader shortly after the start. Holding the fort, the 26-year-old defended his lead magnificently against some of the country’s best dirt-track racers. As he crossed the checkered flag, Seavey guaranteed a sixth victory in the Chili Bowl for team owner Kevin Swindell.

Seavey is following in the footsteps of his dirt car owner, if anything. Being a six-time winner at the event, including two victories as team owner of the #39 Midget Car, Kevin Swindell could have been among the competitors in this year’s alphabetical soup, but luck had other plans. Speaking to Speed Sport, Swindell applauded Logan Seavey’s credentials behind the steering wheel, albeit with a dig at fellow team owner Keith Kunz.

Swindell understands the feeling of winning a Golden Driller very well. Standing on the pinnacle of the American dirt racing circuit is an emotion he has felt four times in his career as a driver. Watching his protégé Logan Seavey take up that title was when life came full circle for him. Kevin Swindell took pride in Seavey’s win mainly because the 26-year-old’s competition involved multiple cars from Keith Kunz Motorsports.

KKM brought its big guns to the 2024 Chili Bowl Nationals, with Kyle Larson announcing his return and a contender in Tanner Carrick showcasing his prowess in the prelims. Crediting Seavey for his performances, Kevin Swindell said, “It’s incredible when you think about Keith (Kunz) having 15 cars or whatever it is they have down there, compared to us showing up once a year with one car and one guy. It feels really cool to accomplish.”

Having been a two-time USAC National Midget Series champion, Logan Seavey has honed his skills for a long time. His achievements in the past half-decade justify his confidence in Chili Bowl. Kevin Swindell has been aware of his talent for a long time and has courted Seavey accordingly. Following his Knoxville wreck in 2015 that left his bottom half disabled, Seavey was like a breath of fresh air for him.

Swindell stated about the long-lasting dynamic between the two, “Logan and me go back to, I don’t know, probably 2015 or 2016 right after I got hurt. I remember he was one of the people that when I was stuck doing nothing, I was playing video games with him and stuff. To give him a great opportunity here is awesome. I think the kid’s a world-class race car driver, and he shows it time and time again.”

Continuing the conversation, Swindell made a shocking revelation about a potential hindrance to Seavey’s win that could have derailed his challenge.

A lot of teams had less time for track preparation. The Mahindra Tractors Midget Car even suffered from tire wear and lost rubber on the dirt track. A similar situation could have unfolded for Kevin Swindell and Logan Seavey. However, a cautious approach to an unknown and fresh dirt track paid dividends, as Swindell revealed,

“To come in here with some unknowns about the changes with the tires and everything and to be kind of be able to pick up where we left off was really good. Last night, (Seavey) kind of got himself in a hole and then dug himself out of it.”

Seavey had to come back from P7 in the qualifying race on Friday. The 26-year-old successfully trounced the rest of the grid to lead the race as he crossed the checkered flag in P1. However, that was only the first mistake for the team. A second mistake in the main event on Saturday had the team concerned about a second victory.

“We actually had a couple little gremlins pop up here in the feature that we just survived,” Swindell said. “I think we had about three quarters of a gallon of fuel left because of a little issue, so that almost got us.”

Swindell-Curb-Bertrand Motorsports is undoubtedly the favorite to defend its Golden Driller in 2025 as well. With age by his side, Logan Seavey’s winning streak could only extend from here.
