NBC had been sporadically covering a few NASCAR races in the 1990s before their original five-year contract. Splitting television broadcasting rights between Fox, NBC, FX, and Turner Sports, NASCAR signed a $2.48 billion deal in 1999. The terms of the contract would be effective from 2001 up until 2006. Fox and FX covered the first half of the season, while NBC partnered with TBS to broadcast the remaining races, starting from the month of July. After a long hiatus, NASCAR returned to NBC once again in 2015 with a nine-year contract. Covering the remainder of the season after Fox’s first 16-race broadcast clause, NBC’s NASCAR coverage starts with the Nashville Superspeedway races.

While Fox has been awarded 13 Emmys for their NASCAR coverage, recently it has been at the receiving end of the NASCAR world’s ire. Earlier criticized by the fans, NBC has now fired shots at its fellow NASCAR broadcaster, picking apart their ‘poor graphics’.

Considering the reactions on social media, Fox Sports NASCAR coverage was an eye sore for fans. Plagued by advertisements and sudden cutaways, Fox’s erratic coverage became the talk of the town. Things got worse for Fox when its play-by-play announcer, Mike Joy made a comical gaffe during the Sonoma race event, confusing Denny Hamlin for Martin Truex Jr. What irked fans, even more, was Fox Sports’ odd choice to have the headshots of drivers as cartoon figures.

With Fox Sports out from the 2023 NASCAR season, NBC has filled in the broadcaster role, starting its NASCAR season in Nashville. As Fox was ridiculed for their coverage throughout their 2023 NASCAR run, NBC has now joined in on the drama. In a recent tweet, NBC took a shot at its fellow broadcaster’s odd choice of having cartoon figures for driver headshots.

NBC wrote, “Our on-air graphics look crispy. [relieved face emoji]”. The tweet had a screen grab from NBC’s Nashville broadcast, with Tyler Reddick’s #45 car in the background and a headshot of Tyler Reddick at the bottom left corner. NBC chose to display a proper photo of Tyler Reddick for the driver’s headshot, an obvious call out to Fox’s cartoon path choice.
