Shane Van Gisbergen has an exciting year ahead of him as he announced his transition to NASCAR in 2024. Gisbergen’s historic debut at the inaugural Chicago street course race is one of the driving factors for him to join stock car racing. However, when asked if SVG could replicate his Supercars success in the Cup Series, Brodie Kostecki, SVG’s fellow Supercars-turned-NASCAR driver answered that 2024 will be tougher. Appearing as a guest on the popular podcast, The Money Lap Live, Kostecki also explained the advantage that Supercars drivers have when racing in NASCAR.
Brodie Kostecki was keeping close tabs on Shane van Gisbergen’s NASCAR debut
Shane van Gisbergen has competed in three NASCAR races this year. Following his debut in Chicago, he followed it up with an oval debut at the Indianapolis road course. He drove in two races that weekend, on each in the Truck Series and the Cup Series. His success in Chicago resulted from his acquaintance with street course races. Brodie Kostecki highlighted the same in his statement as he said,

“To be honest, when I heard that Chicago was going to be on the NASCAR schedule, the first ever street circuit that NASCAR was going to, and then obviously Shane announced that he was going over. I was actually eager to see how it all sort of played out. I knew that he was going to reach some sort of success by being in the top 5 or top 3, but these street circuits, we race at them four or five times a year.”
SVG is adept at gaining speed in the car. With Trackhouse Racing‘s able crew behind him in the next season, he could very well show the fans a display of that. Hinting at the same, Brodie believes that street courses have negated the risk of cars going out of the track, increasing the chances of racing on the weekend.
“It’s a road course, but it’s honestly nothing like a road course in the sense that you go to a road course, you can learn all your breaking markers, and there’s really minimal risk of riding the car off and not being able to compete for the rest of the weekend.”
However, the reigning Supercars champion also put in a verdict about how SVG’s NASCAR season might turn out. Notably, he seemed pretty wary of declaring it easy.
“I watched every single session that he was in, and watching him get up to speed was pretty cool to see. But I don’t think he’ll have it easy next year,” claimed Kostecki.
Contrary to Kostecki’s verdict, Gisbergen’s past performances in the NASCAR circuit has clearly shown he has the ability to chase down race leaders. However, if he can retain that will be a big question, especially when the reigning Supercars champion Kostecki is also poised to move continents owing to stock car racing.

Brodie Kostecki races for Erebus Motorsport which is in an alliance with RCR. This could set him up for a handful of races in America next year, and with team owner Richard Childress’ eagerness to bring him over, his interest in NASCAR is natural. However, if that will convert to a full-time switch to NASCAR is yet to be written in stone.
Childress, who flew to Australia to support Brodie’s Supercars campaign at the Adelaide 500, had addressed the driver’s potential switch to NASCAR next year. “One of the reasons I am coming over is to possibly talk to a couple of the sponsors that were involved with us and see if we can get the sponsorship lined up and see if we can bring him over again. I would like to run him in at least four, maybe five (races). We have a few road courses, but would like to also run him in an oval over here,” Childress had said while talking to ‘The Australian’.
Now that Gisbergen has left the Australian continent searching for greener pastures on the ovals of America, it remains to be seen how Kostecki’s career turns out and if NASCAR will be a part of it shortly.
