Racing is a risky business. The one thing that provides race car drivers any reassurance is the presence of a safety crew in times of crisis. However, what happens when you feel inadequately assisted by the crew you except full cooperation from? Joey Logano got into a situation where he needed help from the safety crew at Pocono Raceway on Sunday. However, their assistance left him fairly dissatisfied.

Logano felt helpless on track to the point where he was seen hurling expletives at the crew who were trying to figure out how they could help him. His frustration was evident as he shared with the media his take on what NASCAR needs to be doing when situations such as his wreck arise.

On Sunday, Logano’s #22 got spun to the extent that it created a multi-car wreck at Pocono. The wreck led his car to have flat tires. The Team Penske driver was not intent on driving or moving the car further for fear that it could bring damage to the car. Logano further felt the act of driving miles with flat tires pretty redundant, for it wasted a significant amount of his race time.

Logano had his answer ready when asked by Frontstretch whether putting in the four tires on the spot would have helped him to get back quickly on track.

No. We would have saved the hassle of dragging around the racetrack.  The damage was done from the wall. We would have saved a lap-and-a-half of time for all the fans to be out there watching cars racing, instead of seeing my b*tt being towed around backwards.

“So you would have saved a little bit of racing time there and probably not getting our head shook around for a little bit,” said the 2023 Atlanta Cup Series race winner. Logano finished 35th in Pocono, and he felt that the incompetence of Pocono’s safety crew had a role to play in it.

All Logano had wanted from the time the wreck happened was to be towed to the pit stand for a quick fix. The safety crew, however, understood that after a long time had passed. They had expected him to drive with the flat tires before they helped out. It was a simple case of miscommunication—one that, according to Logano, stemmed from inexperience.

These guys don’t know what they’re doing. But the experience level of doing something every single week versus seeing a race car once a year is tough. That’s really hard and we’re all in a position out there while I’m sitting there watching cars go by me with a chance of getting a good finish being left as I’m trying to communicate to somebody and they can’t hear me or listen or you know or they’re trying to figure out what to do,” he explained.

But it didn’t end there. He further explained the redundancy in even thinking that Logano could have driven the distance. They don’t know that you can’t push your car with four flat tires on it the car doesn’t steer, you know. And I’m trying to tell them to hook it up and end up trying to push me. Wasted a lap and a half before they tried to hook it so just…. there’s a better way to do it,” he mused.
