Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Amy’s eerie encounters
NASCAR has had its fair share of chilling moments. Many of them were connected to the Talladega Superspeedway – popularly known for its ‘cursed’ nature. In 1974, drivers and teams awoke on race day to find that their cars had been vandalized. Sugar and were found in gas tanks and tires were slashed – yet no culprit was found. Then in 1987, Bobby Allison’s car shot off the track and towards the grandstands as the fence was torn down. Thankfully, nobody was killed, although one fan lost his eye due to flying debris.
In 1973, Bobby Isaac heard “strange voices” that told him to get out of his car mid-race. Subsequently, Larry Smith was killed in a wreck in the same race, and Isaac retired from full-time racing following that incident. All these bone-chilling stories have scattered NASCAR lore for ages. But what Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his wife recounted is sure to give you nightmares.
In a recent episode of Bless Your ‘Hardt, the couple sat down for a ghost stories session. Amy Earnhardt started off with hers, an eerie encounter she had had as a child. “There was this one night, I was playing Super Mario Brothers with one of my girlfriends. We were 10/11. There was nobody else awake. And we kept hearing this ‘chop’. Like, something was chopping a vegetable or something in the kitchen. We eventually got brave enough to go in there. And the cutting board and knife were sitting out, but there was no food around. And we got scared to death. We never stayed up playing video games ever again after that. But yeah, every once in a while, we would see something in my room.” Did that send chills down your back? Wait, there are more coming! While Amy Earnhardt’s incident was limited to a sound, Dale Earnhardt Jr‘s was visual.

The veteran driver recounted his story, “I was at my house when I lived across the street from DEI… had built that club downstairs that you saw on MTV Cribs. I had went down there, sat down, and just the light of the television was all that was in the room…look over my right shoulder…swear that I saw a girl, late teens, early 20s, in a white dress like 1800s, 1700s – standing pillar still. And she was sort of transparent. I mean, it was as real as day. I freaked out.”
Well, all this talk of spooky incidents can sure be frightening, even in bright daylight. So let us delve into a story of bravery against the paranormal.

NASCAR’s very own ‘ghostbuster’
No, the sport is not thinking of doing a collab with the popular movie series. NASCAR’s own documentary on Netflix is about Cup Series racers’ personal lives, and does not have any paranormal events in it. However, a NASCAR employee is a real-life Ghostbuster. DeWayne ‘Ryder’ Zirkle was a full-time hauler driver for the No. 16 Roush Fenway Racing team of Sprint Cup Series driver Greg Biffle. But while working on the racetrack during the day, he hunted for spirits at night.

Ryder moonlighted as a certified paranormal investigator. In 2016, Ryder enlisted his son Dustin and No. 16 hauler co-driver Chris Miko to explore a 1932 three-story dwelling nestled between Harmony and Union Grove in North Carolina. Ranging from spotting a woman in the window to treating the spirits with gifts, they had an eventful time.
DeWayne Zirkle recalled how his paranormal interests started in a 2016 interview. “It kind of started when I was young. I grew up in a house that was supposedly haunted. Mom told me about the little girl that lived there and everything. We had things moved around, and candles would be lit sometimes when they wouldn’t be lit when you went to bed.”
Then the first ‘Ghostbusters’ trip was equally thrilling, as Zirkly said: “First (ghost hunt) we went on was in High Point, North Carolina… Me and Dustin, my son — we load our equipment up, my other son goes with us — scared to death the whole time. First step into the house, every piece of equipment we had died. Which is a good sign of spirits and all because they will drain the energy from your equipment.”
