The scene is critical for Team Penske and its associated manufacturer, Ford. After the first-round eliminator in Bristol, the all-American manufacturer got three of its top cars knocked out, putting them in dire straits. The 500-lap race at the short track saw two Cup Series champions go out, making the speedway run in Talladega a do-or-die event for Ryan Blaney of Team Penske.

On a track where the great Dale Earnhardt laid siege with his #3 Chevy, Blaney and his #12 Ford might have a fishing chance, considering his impressive track record on speedways. Ahead of his highly anticipated Talladega adventure, the Coca-Cola triumphant mentioned how his relationship with the late great’s associate gives him an edge, one that he is counting on to work his magic to advance into the round of 8 with a win.

Ford’s sour 2023 campaign continued when 3 of its drivers got eliminated in Bristol. Joey Logano, Stewart-Haas Racing‘s Kevin Harvick, and Indy conqueror Michael McDowell were all ousted from the playoffs. While the reigning Cup Series champion, Logano, got his day ruined in a flash after trouble met him in the middle of the track, collecting the #22 driver in a chain of wrecks, Harvick’s SHR nightmare got the veteran a bitter farewell.

Even though fans rest their hopes on the #17 and #6 RFK Racing Fords, Team Penske’s sole hope remains on its Coca-Cola 600 triumphant, Ryan Blaney. With just 3 cars left in the picture, all eyes are on the speedway specialist Blaney to make the Ford camp proud as the action reaches the gates of the 2.6-mile Talladega Superspeedway.

With the playoff extravaganza reaching Talladega, the spotlight has fallen on one other racing family for their dominance over the track. The Earnhardts—The Intimidator and his son, Dale Earnhardt Jr.—are synonymous with the Superspeedway. In total, both racers have racked up 16 wins, with Dale Earnhardt Sr. winning four more than his son.

Reflecting on his speedway run, Blaney revealed his optimism, mentioning his spotter, Josh Williams, who grew up around the late driver. He said, Yeah, we’ve been pretty good on the speedway, been able to win a few and it’s tough you know, I feel like it’s kind of a combination. Obviously, a fast car helps but the relationship with your spotter, you know the communication that Josh (Williams) and I’ve, we’ve worked on it for a long time to try to get that down spotters are super important for the speedway stuff.”

Ryan Blaney further added, citing how significant a spotter’s role is in such high-speed tracks. “Gives me an idea of what momentum is going to be generated and it’s a big reason of why I make decisions so Josh is super important, he’s a great spotter and does a great job at that,” said the driver sharing his optimism ahead of Sunday’s race.
