Ross Chastain's jab at Chase Briscoe—just friendly banter or a sign of deeper rivalry brewing?

NASCAR, as a sport, is an amalgamation of distinct personalities and characters. Some are shy and reserved, whereas a few are upfront and on the go with their conduct – both on and off the racetrack. It’s fair to say that Ross Chastain has carved up his own space and developed a reputation for himself as someone who likes to do things differently.

Thanks to his unapologetic racing style, he has ruffled some feathers since, making his move into the Cup Series. And it seems like he is looking to spark a new rivalry with the Stewart Haas Racing star, Chase Briscoe.

Remember, we spoke about distinct personalities that make up the Cup garage? While Chastain is one of the outspoken, unapologetic characters, Briscoe is someone who rather keeps his nose out of trouble. But, it seems like Jeff Gluck’s routine question on his special segment 12-Question might have ignited a new rivalry.

During the interview, Jeff Gluck asked the melon man, “Which driver would you least like to be stuck with on an elevator?” Although Chastain has hard feelings against the SHR star, he went on to add. “Chase Briscoe. Not anything malicious. I just think he’s boring. I don’t think we would talk. We could talk about dirt racing because I have done a little bit of it, and I could ask him some questions.”

It is hard to get Briscoe’s direct response to this statement, and the SHR driver might not react to it at all. That’s just the way he is. In fact, his move to Joe Gibbs Racing replaces a driver who resembles his qualities and low-key lifestyle, Martin Truex Jr. Remember this: Briscoe could be the game-changing driver leading a JGR team.

Ross Chastain has undoubtedly made a mark in the Cup Series with instant success at Trackhouse Racing. However, despite the bright displays, the 2024 season has been off the mark, and the melon man knows he needs to do a better job to improve as a driver.

Since he arrived at Trackhouse, Chastain has clinched four wins to his name and consecutive appearances in the playoffs. But, the 2024 season has been a struggle for the driver and his team. With a single win or streak of successive performances, they are below the cutline, relying on the last race of the regular season.

The 2022 season is perhaps the highest point in Chastain’s racing career. But he hasn’t been able to recreate that magic in the next couple of years. “I’m sure after 2022, people have this bullseye we kind of hit early with the Gen 7 car that we haven’t quite hit again. We’ve had glimpses of it…So I’d say the outside perspective is we’re probably not where we want to be, and by paper, we are — but I think we’re capable of more” he added.

Ross Chastain and the #1 team are against the ropes going into the Southern 500 race this weekend. A win could see them turn a corner for good, and a failure to make the playoffs would only add to their 2024 woes.
