AJ Allmendinger has a knack for pulling rabbits out of his hat on superspeedways. Faced with an early-race penalty and two lost laps at the 2024 Daytona 500, most drivers would have felt dejected. But not The Dinger. With grit, determination, and a touch of magic, he clawed his way back to claim a stunning sixth-place finish – his fourth consecutive top-10 at the Great American Race.

However, Kaulig Racing’s veteran #16 driver is often known for his prowess on road courses, with the early stages of his career developing on the open-wheel racing circuits of the IndyCar Series. His consistency on superspeedways like Daytona and Talladega is frequently overlooked because all three of his Cup Series wins originated on traditional road courses or combined circuits like the Charlotte ROVAL, where he won his only race last year.

He achieved a remarkable feat by completing all 200 laps: finishing every single Daytona 500 he has ever started – 11 in total. This surpasses Rick Mast’s record for most consecutive Daytona 500 starts without a DNF, solidifying Allmendinger’s place on the historic asphalt of the Daytona International Speedway. Moreover, the Kaulig Racing driver is 11th on the list of best average finishes of all time in 10+ starts at the Great American Race. What makes all this all the more impressive is the obstacles he had to overcome to get there.

Disaster struck early for Allmendinger. A lining-up infraction landed him two laps behind with a penalty, dashing his hopes for glory. But the veteran driver refused to surrender. He channeled his experience, battled through the draft, and made strategic pit stops, slowly clawing his way back into contention.

As the laps dwindled, Allmendinger found himself in the thick of the fight, dicing for position and showcasing his trademark wheel-to-wheel racing. When the checkered flag flew, there he was, a triumphant sixth-place finisher – a testament to his champion-like mindset. Allmendinger’s Daytona heroics, however, extended beyond just a classy finish.

In another unique display of consistency and skill, Allmendinger joined John Hunter Nemechek in completing a grueling 800 miles of racing on a single day, participating in both the Daytona 500 and the Xfinity Series season opener. The 2-time Xfinity regular-season champion’s stellar performance, securing sixth in the Daytona 500 and a commendable 10th in the United Rentals 300, showcases his versatility and commitment further.

While Daytona showcased Allmendinger’s prowess, it also marked the beginning of another chapter in his NASCAR career. With a part-time Cup schedule for Kaulig Racing, he remains a force to be reckoned with, sharing the No. 16 car with Josh Williams and Shane van Gisbergen.

Allmendinger’s primary focus, however, lies in the Xfinity Series, where he returns to the #10 Kaulig Racing car for a full-season assault. This series holds a special place in his heart, as he previously won five races each in 2021 and 2022, narrowly missing the championship both times. In 2024, he aims to finally capture the Xfinity Series title, and as his Daytona 500 performance suggests, he’s in top form.

While Allmendinger has a limited Cup schedule at present, Kaulig Racing hasn’t ruled out the possibility of fielding a third car for him in specific races. Events like the Circuit of The Americas, Chicago Street Race, and Watkins Glen are potential destinations for him to display his talent on diverse tracks.
